After I ruined (long story, don't ask:banghead: ) my action bar assembly trying to replace the forend with a surefire on my 870 police I got the replacement forend/action bar assembly today and the left action bar has a small nub the prevents the slide from mating up with the bars.

It looks to me like I can file the small nub off the new action bars and it would work just fine.

Thanks for any help you guys can give.

I'm not aware of any changes made in these two parts, so it looks to me if you need to file a small nub off the new action bar to make it the same as the old one you took out , you should just go ahead and do it.

Just took a look at Kuhnhausen's shop manual and there is no mention of changes in the action bars over time. What sort of 'nub' is it and where is it located? Did you get a new replacement part from Remington or buy it used from another source?

Have to admit that's a new one on me, but I haven't seen it all yet by a long shot. If a little discriminating file work is all it takes to match the contour of your original part, that shouldn't be a drawback. Remember it's easier to take off metal than put it back...

HWP,
Was this a parts gun? It sounds like you had an old-style action bar assembly with an old-style sled and bolt installed. The new action bar design has an extra "nub" as you put it, on the left bar which corresponds with a slot in the new-style sled. This is very curious.
As you found out, the action slide should be to the rear when changing out the fore end to prevent twisting the action bars as there is more support in this position.

The gun is a 870 police 2 3/4 only and only says 870 police on the side with no magnum lettering. My other 870 police is a magnum and my wingmaster (all were purchased used) and do not have the tab on the left action bar.

Looks like I will spend a few minutes with file in hand monday.
