I would like to know what the difference is in the Win model 70 featherweight and a Win model 70 xtr featherweight?

XTR was a term used in the 80's, and into the 90's to show it was one of the top of the line models. The term was used on all of Winchesters line, not just the 70's. You will see a few 94 XTR's as well.

At that time they offered some budget versions. There are featherweights made before the 80's and after the mid-90's that are still top quality rifles that were made before, and after the XTR

The main difference is that the XTR was push-feed, and the current Model 70 is a controlled-round feed with claw extractor.

Thanks guys for the info. The gun I am looking at is a model 70 featherweight that was made in the 80's. So it sounds like the XTR was a step up. Another question I should have asked was. Would it be hard to strip the satin finish on the gun and make it into a oiled finish?

The pushfeed Featherweights from the 80's are an excellent rifle that can usually be fond at bargain prices because theya re not the newer CRF rifles. I prefer the CRF, but have a couple of the older pushfeeds and mine shoot and look great.

Refinishing a stock can be done with an oiled finish, but unless you really know what you are doing I'd probably leave it alone, or have it professionally done.

If your stock is in bad shape www.cdnnsports.com used to have a lot of Winchester Featherweight stocks at great prices. They are designed for the newer FN produced rifles but they sell an adaptor for $10 that will make it fit the older rifles.

This is the stock http://www.cdnninvestments.com/wifeloacwast.html
