I've been reading a lot about light and handy .308 bolt guns. I'm thinking I might try to find one soon. I've seen the Ruger offerings and like them. My buddy has a Remington 600? in .308 that is back at the factory because it fires when you close the bolt-- But it was a fun and accurate rifle. I'm trying to learn about the Model 7 vs. the 700. What are the differences and what would recommend one over the other.

Also, if there are other handy and light bolt guns out there in .308 with 18-20" barrels please feel free to tell me about them.

Thanks,

I can't speak to the differences between the two guns you asked for other than I think the Model 7 barrel tapers a lit quicker than the standard model 700 barrel. That helps with the weight.

Personally the balance of the model 7 is all wrong for me. They always seemed "stock heavy" when I shoulder them and I prefer my rifles to be either neutral or a little muzzle heavy. Besides the stock length is way too short for me. I feel like I am folding my arms up when I shoulder one.

Other light, handy bolt-actions........

-Steyr Scout ($$$$$, though)
-Ruger Frontier Rifle or model 77 compact ( I really like these, but I have the same problem with the stock being too short)
-Mosin-Nagant model 38 (not chambered in .308, but 7.62x54R is closer to .30-06 and some of the new scout mounts for these are top notch)
FN Patrol Bolt Rifle- a little heavier than the ones mentioned above, but the one I looked at in the store seemed more than light enough for active hunting

remington 700 mountain rifle.
remington 700 titanium.

700 vs. 7 - they are similiar rifles, but w/ small differences. eg, the rear bridge on a 7 is smaller. stocks will not interchange. i am not positive about the triggers, but i believe the triggers do not interchange. the model 7 is based on the old 600...

one over the other... i like the model 7... i really like the 700. when in doubt, the 700 is the safe choice, if for no other reason than aftermarket parts support is better.

Doesnt the model 7 have a shorter barrel. I thought it was like 20".

I really want a Model Seven in .308, but NIB they are just out of my price range, and I can't find one used locally. :(

That's exactly the issue I'm running into. I'm finding older 788's and 600's for less, and Rugers seem to be less expensive as well. I'm going to save up some $$ and look for a good deal on a used .308 with 18"--20" barrel and good glass.

I just sold my FAL and have all this brass and dies that I need a rifle for.

The 7's trigger is almost identical to a 700's, just sized a little differently...same adjustments, internal mechanism.

For best accurracy, you may want to neck size only. You don't need to full length resize for a bolt action, the way you do on a semi.

You may want to check out the Tikka T3 Lite.
I have one and it's a lot like the Model 7 in size but it has a longer barrel (22.5").
For me, it handles better than the 7 and is only 6lbs 4 oz. Like W Turner, I think the 7 is too stock heavy.

You know what kills me?

The other day I hit one of the local stores looking for one. Found a Model 7 in stainless/synthetic (not really what I want, I would prefer to have the LS with the Iron sights) within my price range. But it was in .223. :banghead:

Looking on Gunbroker there isn't even a Model 7 LS in .308.
