I've been looking for a while at Remington 700's and Winchester 70's. I'm eventually going to end up with one of each.

I'm confused on the 700's though. I was browsing around different auction sites and forums looking for a going rate. I noticed that there are several different models of the 700. The one's that come to mind are the ADL, BDL, one that was a lightweight version, and I think there was a CDL.

What are the differences?

I'm wanting a nice 700. Not one of the synthetic stocked ones. I want a nice checkered stock and probably a jeweled bolt.

Any help would be appreciated.

If it matters, I'm looking to get it in either .264, .270, or .280. Maybe 30-06 or .308, if the price is right when I'm ready to buy.

ADL does not have a hinged floor plate BDL does. BDL comes in synthetic or wood and has iron sights. The CDL has a hinged floor plate and a checkered wood stock, gorgeous IMO, seeing as how I just got one, no iron sights! CDL also has a stainless option. I believe all have jeweled bolts...I know the CDL does. If you want iron sights get the BDL; if not then the CDL both are beautiful.

My dad has a BDL 22-250. Came with scroll engraving on the action and nice Monte Carlo stock. The only thing I don't like is it came with irons on it.

Babalouie,

+1 on everything you said. I too have a 700 CDL in .30-06 and think it is a great rifle. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for one.

I also have a friend who has been trying to sell me a Winchester 70 in 7mm-08 for $325. It's a 1968 model.

The 700 BDL is the nicest looking rifle made for under $700 and it is very comfortable for me. I like that it has a thicker grip than the CDL.

It comes in .270 I believe, has a nice stock, jeweled bolt, and has a hinged floor plate and iron sights, all of which are good things in my opinion.

There is also a Classic, which is no longer produced. Nice checkered stock, hinged floorplate, no iron sights. They produced these in only one caliber a year, never repeating a caliber. I have one in 6.5x55 Swede, when that was the caliber for 1994. Most of the time, it was produced in an less common caliber, such as the 6.5, 8mm mauser, 7mm Mauser, etc.

There are 700 variations, but since you have already narrowed it down to 5 calibers, it should be easy from here.

SPS, XCR, Mountain LSS, CDL SF

Note that the only stainless Remington 700's are the SPS, XCR, Mountain LSS and CDL SF. The SPS is basically a stainless BDL priced at around $550 bucks. The XCR is a stainless BDL with much nicer fit and finish, nicer stock and a coating that makes the rifle more weather resistant that regular stainless steel. The CDL SF (stainless fluted) is a stainless BDL action with stainless fluted barrel and a wood stock. My favorite is the Mountain LSS (Laminated Stock, Stainless). This rifle has a slim 22 inch barrel and a mountain rifle stock. It is also built on a nicely finished BDL action, much like the CDL SF. It offered more barrel than the Model 7, which I like better for the 7mm-08.
