Lately I have seen a lot of posts about how do I remove the bolt on xxx rifle. I just thought it might be nice to have a thread specifically stating all ways that I have encountered (and you guys too as I am sure that you have seen some that I haven't).

1. Older guns generally use this.
Pull the bolt back. As the bolt reaches the rear, squeeze the trigger. The bolt should continue out the back of the receiver.
*Do not squeeze the trigger until the bolt is unlocked. Dry firing rimfire rifles is not a good way to keep your firing pin whole.

2. More modern guns are now using this.
Look for a leaver on the action. This should release the bolt from the receiver when used.

3. Other.
Push the safety past its normal range when pulling the bolt out?
*I can't personally verify this but remember... don't force it or you may break it if your bolt doesn't come out this way.

Some I have messed with a couple that used a button (I believe the rem 700's do and maybe the mossberg 100 atr does) or "lever" on the action. All of mine use the trigger method as well, but I know there are other methods out there.

My Mauser must be considered modern, it has a lever on the left side, hold it out, slip out the bolt:)

JD,
That's why I put generally in that first description for old rifles :) Exceptions will exist for every rule of thumb.

Never heard of pushing the trigger forward.. thanks John.

My Winchester Model 70 has a small lever/button at the left rear of the action that you have to push foreward to release the bolt. My Savages had a lever plus pull the trigger that you have to use to release the bolt. My Remington 700 has a tab in front of the trigger that you have to pull to release the bolt so every manufacturer has their own method needed to remove the bolt from that particular rifle. Get a owner's manual and they will tell you how to do it.

My Walthers have a rocker button located at the top, left, rear of the reciver to remove the bolt, My Kimber Hunter has a slide button on the rear left side to release the bolt.
The Annie 164 you pull the trigger as the bolt release

I like to take it out through the ejection port...tough squeeze. :neener:

I find that most rimfire bolt guns use the former method that you describe, and that most centerfire use a lever/button/dohicky to release the bolt.
