I have a bunch of ammo, maybe 5-6 rounds, that have nasty dents in them and my gut tells me to never shoot something that is deformed like that. My question is, how do I safely and properly dispose of live rifle ammunition?

I had the same situation. I just took it to a local gun shop and they disposed it. You can also take it to your nearest police station, I did that once several years ago and they took it also.

All the indoor ranges and a few of the outdoor ranges I shoot at have little metal trays or boxes for "duds". I have had unknown or sketchy ammo that I wind up just taking with me on my next range trip and dropping it in the box.

Since you're only talking about a few rounds here and there instead of boxes of ammo, all you need is a kinetic bullet puller. I think they're great to have around. I've used one for over 20 years.

I just put a drop of oil down in the empty case to deactivate the primer.

It is not going to blow up the garbage truck.

We all know what happens when a bullet goes off when its not inside the barrel.... It is likely to blow that garbage truck to pieces, especially if they are dangerous DRT one shot stop an elephant defensive rounds! :neener:

Everyone posted good suggestions so far, so take your pick and listen to at least one of them.

ps. your gut is right and I wouldn't shoot them either

Why waste time with the oil and primers.

Just fire the empty case in your gun to kill the primer.

That should take of it, then throw empty case in the trash.
