Have done several European mounts over the years using Clorox bleach to clean and whiten the skulls but the bleach weakens the skull causing "chalking" of the bone, so decided to try boiling the skull on this gemsbok instead.

After removing everything possible from the skull, it was placed in a 5 gallon bucket with enough hot water to completely submerge even horn bases 3-4" then added a cup or so of dish detergent to help de-grease. One advantage of boiling versus bleach is that the soap/water do not discolor the horns/antlers.

Lacking an outside gas burner, I purchased a single burner electric hotplate with hopes that it would be capable of brining the "stew" up to a slow simmer. It was, and in fact, once water started to roll/bubble slowly, I had to cut back the thermostat and let 'er cook overnight.

Next morning, most of the remaining material on the skull fell off or was easily removed and the horn sheaths were loosened sufficiently to twist and remove from the bone cores, which were sawed off at about 3".

The stripped skull was then submerged in 3% hydrogen peroxide for about 30 hours to whiten. If I ever do another, I will probably do this step differently. Understand that stronger (40% I believe) peroxide is available at beauty supply stores and wrapping the skull w/strips of old towels allows saturation w/peroxide for faster whitening. Happy with my results, but it took a lot of the 3% to submerge the skull; fortunately the 3% is quite inexpensive.:)

After whitening complete, rinsed well and set in bright sunlight for a day or two to dry. Decided best option to mount skull plate was to fill brain cavity with epoxy with a 1/4" bolt embedded since there did not seem to be enough solid bone to hold the weight with wood or sheet metal screws.

The next step proved to be the most difficult, but again, if I do another, I'll do it differently. I soon learned that even a 1/16" error in "squaring" the skull plate on plaque really shows up at the end of the 38" horns!:what: Next time I will clean off my work bench to provide a large enough area to mount/square the skull & horns rather than trying to eyeball just the skull. When I was satisfied that it was squared up, I put a wood screw through the plaque to keep it from moving.

Once skull mounted, I boiled a cheap cigar to make a nicotine solution which was sprayed inside the horn sheaths to discourage insects.

Looks great! I did this one basically the way you did Dawn dish washing soap and boiling water. After the Dawn had pulled the grease/oil out of the skull I changed the water and added peroxide...lowered the heat. Time consuming process.

That gemsbok looks great and I've been getting a hankering for either one of those or a scimitar oryx. I'm out in West Texas but happy to drive; where did you take that if you don't mind?

Very nice job on your buck, kb .

I have covered skull plates using velvet and Plaster of Paris. The P of P can be finished smoothly or rough; I prefer the rough finish:

Problems w/photobucket...hope this corrects the problem.

I lease on H Yturria Land & Cattle Co., La Joya Ranch but guided hunts can be booked through https://www.wildlifesystems.com/contact-us.html. The video at link was taken on Punta del Monte. The gemsbok are on La Joya ranch but they have scimitars on Punta del Monte Ranch.

I skull cap, scrape with knife and set on a shelf.
Comes out just fine, if one is careful and is a detail freak.
Dangerous if one is a klutz, gets frustrated or tries to fight/hurry.
Always work away and never fight it.
Buddy did do a euro of a whole skull for me, boiled it.

I'm planning on doing a Euro mount on the buck I took this last fall that is pictured in my Avatar. Everything I've watched and read suggests Oxyclean at the end of a boil and then 30-40% hydrogen peroxide for a couple hours taking precautions not to get it onto the antlers. They have all seemed to come out amazingly! Also might be good practice to wear gloves when using the hydrogen peroxide as it can burn the skin at high concentrations. All good looking mounts.

To do a euro mount is quite easy. First skin the head, saw to the style you want, then remove as much meat from the scull before you start the boiling. Boil skull in plain water. If the water comes over the antlers wrap antlers in foil. Don't boil for too long and keep checking till the meat is ready to remove. I remove all meat, etc, with a very blunt ,old paring knife. When you think you have remove enough meat, cartilage get out the pressure washer and carefully power wash the skull. Go careful when power washing the brain cavity as you can get blowback :barf: . Power washing will get the trophy nice and clean. Put trophy in a shallow plastic container and cover with kitchen paper pushing kitchen paper to all nooks and cranies. now wet the kitchen paper with the peroxide. you only need to wet the paper not flood it. Result nice with trophy.
Dont use house hold bleach,Hypoclorite as the trophy will yellow quite quickly. P1010652.JPG P1010653.JPG P1010654.JPG

Lots of ways to end up with the same results. I just set the head (after cutting it with a hack saw) on the ground in the back yard.
Over time the bugs do a great job of "cleaning" it. Really turns out rather nice. A little touch here and there but over all.... picked clean.

Professional skull preparation;

Flesh out and brain out your skull.

1lb baking soda per gallon of water.
Boil for about three to four hours.
All remaining flesh simply slops off.
Rinse with a hose to get remains flesh in sinuses out.

To whiten;
Mix 80% hydrogen peroxide 20% water, just enough to cover the skull.
Bring to a rapid boil then shut off the heat
Let sit for 12 hours.

You'll have a professional taxidermist grade prepared skull ready to mount as you see fit.

Note;
This works best with an outdoor propane burner and a steel pot. Do not use an aluminum pot. Aluminum will discolor your skull.

I use turkey fryer kits with a single propane burner and a large steel pot. Right after the holidays you can generally find these things on sale at a huge discount! Happy skull boiling folks.

Thanks, Skoghund, I left that step out. Nice skulls! :thumbup:

Thanks, H&H, Never thought of applying heat during HP step; bet that speeds up the process. What strength hydrogen peroxide do you use in the 80/20 mix?

I tried that once w/less than stellar results. Either I was not patient enough, or we don't have as good of bugs in S. Tx as you do, 250. ;):rofl: I have seen others that turned out great, though; maybe my pest control is service doing too good a job?

The 40/50% that you can get at a beauty supply store will work equally as well, you might just have to let it sit a little longer and may be a little cheaper.

100% Hydrogen Peroxide is like 90 cents a quart. Cost is not a factor.
