DIY low-profile gas block?

Has anyone ever cut down their A2 style front sight to make a low-pro that fits under a free float rail? Is it a good alternative to buying a new block?

With as inexpensive as low profile gas blocks are, I wouldn't even bother...unless you just wanted the experience and be able to say you did it. IIRC, in addition to taking the sight off, you will need to grind off the bayonet lug (if present) as well.

My best friend just chopped his site down. Basically the A2 sight was pinned and, in the opinion of our gunsmith, it is better to keep a well-pinned gas block on than remove it and reinstall a clamp-on or attempt to pin a new one. So, they cut it down and installed a Troy TRX free-float rail right over top of the cut-down gas block and it looks great!

I've done it. I used a cut-off wheel on a die grinder and a file. Easy to do and shoots great. Those low pro remmy gas blocks are basically just cut off front sights.

If the FSB is pinned just cut it down. If not, low-pro gas block.

That is exactly what we did for years, I have several cut down sight bases. Leave extra when you cut to profile
