You can use a dragoon nipple wrench to hold the main on dragoons. I find using a u-bolt easier to use plus it also works on 1858 NMAs. All it is a two-dollar u-bolt. I put shrink tubing on the u-bolt black tape on the crossbar.

I use original equipment . . . two thumbs (one on top of the other), pushdown while sliding down. Installation is -push down while sliding up.

On stubborn springs that won't slide, just push the spring to the side - out from under the hammer. Install is the reverse.

Show off  My hands are so jacked up I need all the help I can get.

This is most likely going to be a new practice after having a vise grip slip resulting in some scratches to the grip frame. Thanks for this great tip. I think you mentioned it before too so thanks again. The Rogers and Spencer does not come apart easily without mainspring compression and I don't see the gorilla grip method as something to be mastered anytime soon.

Oh I found this thread again. It works great on the R&S. Thanks for the tip. Life during disassembly is now drama free and normal.
