Do any of you guys carry in a coat pocket?

With winter here, my long coat makes it difficult to get to my primary IWB (or BUG in front pocket) carry.

I've been carrying my BUG J-frame in the coat's large top opening side pocket. (a pocket big enough for a paperback pocket novel)

The only problem is I can't use a pocket holster because the pocket is so large and loose. On the plus side though, I can easily carry two or three speedloaders in my inside breast pocket and I like these much better than speedstrips.

Do any of you guys carry in a coat pocket?

Does carrying without a pocket holster bother you?

A number of years ago I use to carry my S&W Model 38 in my coat pocket when I took the dog for a walk at night. Could never be sure what kind of two or four legged creature you might run into and it was quick and easy just to put that little J frame in my coat pocket. Nowadays if I'm carrying my Model 638 it's in a DeSantis Sof-Tuck holster.
 
During the winter months, I carry my revolver (Colt Magnum Carry) in the front pocket of my bib overalls. Just like your jacket pocket, I feel it is too large a pocket for a holster, but its nice and deep.

Because these overalls have lots of pockets they make me look kind of lumpy anyway, so this minor bulge goes unnoticed. Access is nice and quick and there is nothing in that pocket to hurt the finish of the gun, and no way, unless I find myself upside down somehow, for it to fall out.

I'm considering carrying two, one on each side, to balance out my coat from sagging to one side. :D

But seriously, yes, I find my coat pocket very handy, comfortable and inconspicuous.

In the winter when i have a bigger jacket on i carry a smith 442 in my right coat pocket. I carry my normal 9mm shield at 4 o'clock IWB also. I like the revolver in my pocket because i can have my hand in my pocket and if i have to i can fire from my pocket without the gun jamming. If i exhaust my 5 rounds i still have my EDC shield and a spare mag. During the summer though it is usually one or the other IWB or a lcp in the pocket if i need ultimate concealment.

Can you get a pocket holster outfitted with metal snaps on one side and then do the same with the pocket (preferably on the side facing towards your body)? Snap A into B prior to carrying and insert firearm.

I found a shoe repair shop in the town where I used to live a while back. The owner did some repairs and retrofits on a couple of preferred holsters I used overseas.

eta: How about getting a Velcro-backed holster and modifying the pocket with well sewn Velcro? Or getting the pocket partially sewn into the shape of the firearm? I saw that in a woman's concealed-carry purse once.
Something has to be better than a loose firearm in a coat/jacket pocket.

Just a thought.

Why does it bother you? I wouldn't carry, say, a chambered Glock without a holster, but a lightweight revolver, like my S&W 38, in a jacket pocket, without anything else in the pocket, is just fine. I might have to blow off pocket lint once in a while, but it is safe.

Isn't that how Marlowe carried his .32 snubbie? With a few rounds in the opposite pocket?
 
I would never consider carrying any gun small enough to fit in a pocket and I would never carry any gun without a proper belt and a good holster. What do you do with your gun when you take your coat off?

Because of my work schedule,,,
I often do my grocery shopping at night.

When I'm walking to my car,,,
My hand is in my jacket pocket on my pistol.

I wish I could do this easily in the summer.

I carry that way in a pocket holster. The guns are only 8 or 9 shot 22LR snubs but it offers quicker access that opening up my coat to draw my primary. I never pocket carry with a loaded chamber; one in the pipe for semi or one in the next chamber for revolver. I rarely do it because of the empty chamber thing and the extra stress on a pocket.
 
I do. when wearing certain type of coats that have an inner pocket. This is when I am carrying either my S&W Model 60 .38 or my Charter Arms .22 mag snubbies.
 
A S&W 640 or 642 in my parka pocket. Pocket is too large for a holster but the revolver is secure and readily accessible.
 
I carry in a coat pocket frequently as a backup to a full size firearm on my waist. I have carried a J frame in the past, but currently carry a Glock 26. Usually when I am wearing a coat, I am also wearing gloves at least part of the time. A revolver trigger guard is too small for me with gloves and often short cycles the action. I use a Raven Concealment Vanguard 2 (basically just a trigger guard cover with a lanyard for quick removal) in lieu of a pocket holster.
 
Some pockets are square on the bottom. Some are curved like a slice of liver. Some are nearly triangular.

You can sew a line across the bottom of the pocket to angle the holster for better access, or to raise the holster up.
 
I was in the same perdicament as the OP. A large coat makes my normal IWB carry method very difficult to pull off. I tried a pocket holster in the jacket, it was useless. I breifly thought about sewing it into the pocket to keep it upright. That idea passed and I evntually I discovered that my hybrid IWB holster fits perfectly and snugly in that huge front pocket. The cant is just a little off, but with some practice draws it has become quite fast.

Not yet.

Since my coat pockets are a bit larger than my pants pockets, I tempt myself to try a bigger gun. Yet, I can't stand the imbalance and the way the low pockets sway with real weight in them.
 
Invest in an Uncle Mike's #3 pocket holster for that J-Frame, less than $20 so it's not much to risk. It keeps the grip in the right position.
 
I had a friend who lived in the East Village in Manhattan in the 1970's when Alphabet City was smack city, before the yuppification. When I'd walk from the subway to visit her in the winter you'd better believe I was carrying in my coat pocket. A little tough to reach and pull your gun from under a heavy coat while you're getting mugged. :rolleyes:

Although there were a few good custom holster makers in the city, i.e., Chick Gaylord, 7 Trees, and Gene DeSantis out on the Island would do custom work back then, I don't recall anyone doing pocket holsters at that time.
