Been thinking about carrying my j-frames in a pocket. Decided to try out a Blackhawk nylon pocket holster #3, which appears very similar to an Uncle Mike's Size #3, since it was cheap but still gets generally good reviews from users before buying something more expensive.

Couple of concerns: Gun fits loosely in holster, as in, if I turn it over, gun falls out.

Other concern: with the (unloaded) gun in the holster, I can slip a finger in between the holster body and the gun enough to actually place it on the trigger and pull it back.

Gun stays in pocket while I draw, and looks remarkably like a wallet in my front pants pocket. But I was wondering about the two concerns, are they normal with this style of holster, and are they non-issues with pocket carry? I know guys that simply drop j-frames in their coat and pants pockets with no holsters at all, but that's not for me, even with my 638's long and heavy trigger pull.

Thanks for reading.

Sounds pretty normal.
Nylon pocket holsters have to be loose enough to stay in the pocket during the draw.

If they were form fitted, or tight enough to keep the cylinder from turning, they would very likely come out of your pocket with the gun.

That you can stuff your finger inside & pull the trigger isn't importent.
What is importent is that the trigger is covered and can't be pulled by something outside your pocket.

As rc said, it sounds pretty normal. I don't have a Blackhawk (and mostly use a Mika) but I do have an Uncle Mike's that I've used a lot in the past. In fact, it's in my pocket right now holding an old Charter Arms Undercover. After some "pocket time" the Uncle Mike's molded itself a bit around the gun and the trigger area, closing the gap quite a bit. I guess you could jam a finger in there with a bit of work, but slipping it in... not so much.

i have used a blackhawk size 3 for my 442 for a while now. i really like it. i have no problems with it at all. i cant accidentally put my finger in mine with normal pants on. with relaxed fit jeans, my Mika works better but for my regular fit Levi 505s which i normally wear the Blackhawk actually works better for me.

Go get a DeSantis Nemesis and don't look back. I went through a bunch of "not quite right" pocket holsters before I discovered the Nemesis. It is better than leather, nylon, and spongy black stuff by a mile.
