I just re-read the laws and believe it or not, it looks like us Kalifornians can actually carry on school grounds. That said, do any of you teachers (or anyone else regularly in front of audiences) CCW in the classroom? I'd like to know that I'm armed at school, but I just don't see how that would work out unless I leave it in the car. I think I would be outed in no time if I wore it, and leaving it in my backpack is just too risky.

If I am responsible for the kids, I'd want to be prepared for the worst. Unfortunately, I think it might just be too big of a risk. And leaving it in the car (across the street) defeats the whole purpose of having it on school grounds.

There is a professor at USC that carries in class sometimes. I don't wanna call him out though, because it's not legal here. He is cool though :)

Oh, that would be the REAL USC - University of South Carolina. We were here first, SoCal :neener: 125 years? Ha! [Frenchie voice] I fart in your general direction! [/Frenchie voice]

If you are referring to Section 626.9 of the Penal Code, you are correct. You are exempt from arrest. However, I wouldn't count on keeping your job after it is discovered you are carrying without the written permission of the school district superintendent or equivalent.

Just how much do you really need your teaching job?

Most states prohibit legal concealed carry in schools. Utah has made a lot of news because state law allows it and the Univ. of Utah made policy against it. The legislators told them their policy was in violation of state law and last I heard that's where the stand-off stood.

In Alabama, guns are prohibited at K-12 public schools. The law doesn't mention universities. However, my PUBLIC university has a policy against weapons, so I don't carry.

As hard as it is for the rest of us to imagine, in California, if you can get a CCW, there are practically no limits on where you can carry.

Getting the thing in the first place is another matter, but CA is one of the most CCW friendly states there is, once you have it.

So no, none of the rest of us can get anywhere remotely near a classroom.

I never carried in the classroom.

I always CCWed when we took the kids on out of town field trips. I did not have permission to do this, and I doubt it would have been granted by my limey hoplophobe boss.

I have friends who were on tour with their band and someone bumped them on 95, then robbed them when they pulled over and shot one of them for no reason (they were cooperating). He's had numerous surgeries and health problems ever since. I'm not about to get on the highway with a vanload of kids in my care and no way to protect them.

If I recall correctly, with a CCW in the PRK you do not need anyone's permission to enter school grounds while carrying. That entering with a gun clause is only for people who want to bring guns on school without having exemption status (police and CCW holders). So technically, I can carry on and off school grounds all I want because I am exempt from the law.

However, I am an employee of the district and I would need to read our personnel policies concerning weapons. I know for the students, they will get expelled for any firearms brought on campus. I have not bothered to check out the personnel policies to see what they say about my employement and having a weapon on campus. I am guessing that it will say I can be fired if I have one on campus. I need to check.

Even if I were able to CCW on campus, I probably would not. Unfortunately there are just too many issues surrounding it and I don't want to be a test case. Second, I don't know how the students would react to it. Yes, we say concealed means concealed, but you couldn't tell anyone about it, period. Not even THR. As soon as someone knows you are carrying on school, it will one way or another become an issue. It opens up too many worms. It might not be right, but that is the way society works. I have enough issues in the classroom and I wouldn't want to deal with 30 immature high school students who know I have a handgun on me. Some would be cool with it, some would be intimidated and withdraw, some would probably want to push my buttons. No thanks.

I might consider having one in my vehicle, but that depends on district policy. It would be much easier for me to keep a firearm in my vehicle and not let anyone know about it than having one concealed on my person all day in class. Again, the key is absolutely no one could know about it. Not a single soul.

I think it would be more effective to just train your students to be fighters and go over escape routes and scenarios in a potential SHTF. Make sure they understand that if a shooter comes on campus and gets into out room, it is on. I tell them that if I take a bullet for them, they better kill the guy. I will do the same for them. There is no time to negotiate or talk someone out of it. Deadly, brutal violence is the key. Of course I tell them our first option is to escape out the window and hop the fence next to my classroom and run. We are on the edge of campus, so we have a good shot of getting the hell out of there.

Sometimes you just have to accept that no matter what happens, it might be your time to go. So if the Lord has my exit plan scheduled for a school day and at school, then that is it. Oh well. The rest of the time, I carry so He might use me to stop someone else from having a early exit. I also accept that He might have me exiting in a hail of bullets and my CCW might not do me a bit of good. That is why I don't worry about it.

Interestingly, because of the limbo status of our carry law, 25,000+ Minnesotans with carry permits may carry legally into schools.

I have! :) (but I'm not a teacher)

even though minnesota permit holders may legally carry(while in Limbo?), I don't. There are just too many other issues involved, and even though it may be legal, it is against our school policies, and I have no desire to be a test case. this irks me, as I walk to my car through a dark parking lot, then have to drive home and arrive without my carry gun. Leaving it in the car doesn't seem like a safe option.
what to do...

Hungsquirrel,

Are you by chance referring to the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa? There's about an overwhelming chance that I'll be living in a University apartment there this coming school year.

How much would that suck to leave the PRK only to still not be able to own my own AR!?

Wrench,

The Minnesota CCRN folks sell the handy gun lockboxes for your car for $30.
You'll see the MN CCRN guys at all the big gun shows. I've also seen the lockboxes at Joe's Sporting goods and Frontiersman.

I know it's not a perfect resolution for your situation, but if you have to leave a firearm in your automobile the lockbox helps.

Under the law that is currently being challenged (and is at least temporarily not the law of the State), a Permit holder could carry in the school building if they had permission from the principal.

In many rural districts in MN that would not be a difficult hurdle to overcome.

yeah, I've seen those lockboxes, and that might be an option.
as far as carrying in the classroom, I am a very (ahem) active teacher, and would find it hard to conceal anything except maybe an ankle holster. I teach in an urban environment, and I gotta say I can't see my school administration giving me permission. Kind of makes me chuckle, though, to imagine the looks on their faces were I to try it!!

CCW In The Classroom

WE have always been a nation of rebels , not worrying about political correctness until of late (40 years or so) . If we object to a law or a tax on moral grounds or due to fundamental political disagreement , we have never hesitated to defy that law . We never would have fought the war of independence with England without that attitude. We even practice jury nullification and , to our dismay at times , legislate from the bench . Having said that , I believe that it is our personal responsibility to see to our own defense. No one else can do it for you . The police do not even HAVE to defend you if they are present when you are attacked . They have to arrest the perpetrator afterwords !

I say carry where needed discreetly ! Carry in such a way that you will not be "made" and "outed" . For me , that is a Kahr PM9 in an Alessi ankle holster. A snubbie would work . A Rohrbaugh or a Kel Tec would . Do you think your job is more important than your life ? I work in the ghetto of Detroit on the midnight shift . I am alone , accessible to a walk in pedestrian, but usually see nobody up close . If I had a problem , there is no help to call. The company has a strict "no guns on company property" policy , even in your car in the company parking lot . My boss carries also , in fact , I bought him his holster recently , but they would fire him just as fast as me. He can't allow me or himself to carry regardless of the level of danger , and it's one of the highest crime precincts in the city .

It's a trite old saying but , "I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6" ! Do what you think is right...Tom

Well, one wonders what the problem would be if one carried concealed, since, after all, if the gun is concealed, no one would know you were carrying it -- and if you ever needed it, really needed it, you'd likely not give a crap about the fact that the gun you were using to save your life or the lives of others was being carried illegally.

But apart from that, I don't know who in his right mind would admit, here, to doing something illegal like carrying in a school where it is prohibited. There is nothing to be gained from such an admission, and much to be lost, right?

I work night security in a WA. state school district and I am not allowed to carry.....if any teachers or other district employees are carrying I would tell them to keep their mouth shut about it......if I'm ever questioned I KNOW NOTHING ;) .......tom

did i jsut read this posted by a TExan?? yeeeeeee ha!

man , with the way schools are, there should be responsible people packing in them.

i would do everything possible to maek sure the students dont know you carry, but geez Columbine? one teacher with a gun would have helped a lot.
