I went with a 20 inch barrel Armalite AR-10. $1300 shipped. It has one heck of a trigger too.............

Armalite Ar-10 with a heavy free floated barrel and a leupold mark IIII 4.5-14 X40 you can shoot long range but if things get too problamatic you can put a lot of lead downrange in a hurry. Also you can appreciate a lighter weapon if you have to lug it around all day.

For a do it all .308 I'll keep my HK91. It can hunt and it can be used for personal defense. Otherwise I use my CZ 550FS in .308 for hunting and the HK is a battle rifle.

I didn't/don't have the funds to drop 2K+ on a rifle, so this is my answer;

Ishmash Saiga 308 w/21" barrel, converted with Dinzag internals and K-Var furniture. It is an AK47 on Steroids. Less than $750 invested total in the rifle itself, leaves me plenty room for optics and ammo.
