M58 I have seen a lot of it too. In addition to being my departments's instructor, I worked for a police supply company.
While dealing with small departments in the early 1980s I saw the proverbial "changing of the guard" as the new thinkers were beginning to climb the ranks.

Actually the more some things change the more some stay the same.

Lordy guys. It's Christmas for crying out loud and what do we have going on? A fight between a retired (I'm assuming M58 after thirty years that you retired) cop and an active duty cop. All I can say is thank god I'm a cop in Idaho. Here we've had CCW since 96 and it isn't an issue. Incidentally when it was a bill there was very little debate and I don't recall any of the police organizations coming out against it. Actually I have a CCW. It just makes life easier as a gunowner, i.e. other states around us recognize my Idaho permit and I can purchase a firearm without having to go through NICS because I'm a permit holder.

M58 I do have one small quibble. I'm authorized to carry a Sig 220 and 245. I get eight rounds and seven rounds respectively. I also carry a S&W J Frame which has five shots. Soooo I usually tend to be outgunned in terms of bullets. I've confiscated several autos with hi-cap mags from wayward citizens (that's me being politically correct) in the past. I don't feel that I need more bullets in my sidearm then a civilian has in his/her. And if I had to carry a revolver tomorrow I would be happy with the S&W 686P seven shot with a four inch barrel. Please peace - no flaming.

Doesn't Fort Worth, TX PD still issue revolvers?

I knew for certain that most if not all were carrying auto pistols, but you got me to wondering. I phoned their firearms training division and learned they've been issuing Beretta .40s for the past nine or ten years. They began with the 96D, the DAO model but have gone over to the 96G, the decocker.

For many years, FWPD issued the S&W Combat Masterpiece .38 (Later known as the Model 15) with the option of using one's own .38 or .357 Colt or S&W, but ONLY to be carried with .38 Spl round nose lead ammo.

Later, they would approve certain automatics, if the officer underwent a three-day transition training. When Beretta became issue, there was a period when all new academy classes were required to carry the issue pistol, but the older heads could keep whatever they were carrying. Then, they began transitioning everyone, highest ID numbers first.

Now everyone in uniformed services carries the 96G. Plainclothes can carry other DA autos if their captain approves. Officers can carry personally owned (DA) backup handguns, even small revolvers.

There you are: Probably more than you cared to know . . . .

Like I said on an earlier thread. My department still authorizes officers to carry a revolver, but nobody does. Unless one counts the back up piece. Even the old timers carry autos. I know of two officers who still carry revolvers and they always qualify on the same course that the officers shooting autos carry. One of those officers recently reached down into his savings account and purchased one of the S&W Performance Center 627 8-shots. I don't know what he's doing for speed loaders but he's carrying it. This has been related to me by others, I haven't seen it. The other officer is carrying a Colt .357 SS (not sure if it's a Python or King Cobra). I wouldn't mind having either officer backing me up. They know how to use those wheel guns. It's about quality not quantity. Merry Christmas.

One of our little gun range members has been with Dallas PD for about 20 years and is "grandfathered" to carry what he wants to carry. He's forty-something and still carries 4" Smith 66. And come qualification time, gives a little lesson in humility to his peers with the semis. :D
