Do vests SCREAM gun?

Nope! No scream not even a whimper. Just opened my clothes closet and not a sound came fro:) m any of my vests.:)

In New England, a polarfleece vest isn't out of place or uncommon by any stretch of the imagination 9 months of the year.Pretty standard attire for anyone going out fishing even now.

I have 2 vest's but do not use them in the hot south tex summer... usally unless i carry extra mag's on my belt. I just use a milt sparks IWB for my glock 23 or a Galco conselable for my para 12.45 (what i usally carry) with my untucked shirt ive never had a prob, the galco i dont even feel it on there .....If you got a gut however the pistol may stick out with your stomach and be more difficult to conseal. If you wana go tucked in i would go for my pocket pistol (better than nothing).

Hope it helps those are what i use and havent had any one notice in 2 years of carrying....

I think they are a dead giveaway.

When I see a guy wearing a fishing vest, I can't help but try to spot his weapon and/or other giveaways like a sure fire or extra magazine.

Now how would you be spotting a sure fire or spare mag if the guy is wearing a vest that conceals a gun?

Just because you see a vest and look does not mean it is a dead give away. It means you think the guy must be carrying because of your perspective that folks with vests must have guns.

I have only recently started wearing my 5.11 pants because I feel they have just now become mainstream enough to not scream "has a gun." But I know they attract a small amount of attention because I find myself noticing others who wear them as well.

What I don't understand is that if you think things matter so much, why you even bother with 5.11 pants. You think they are now main stream enought to not be noticed, but by whom? Obviously, gun folks will recognize them and gun folks are about the ONLY folks who recognize fanny packs and vests as being gun-related even when they are not gun related. So why bother with the pants at all? This is especially true given there are a lot of cargo pants manufacturers out there that are not selling tactical gear. Besides, why are you wearing rock climbing gear and not on the rocks? What do you think that strap on your right hip is? It is a carabiner and climbing gear strap where you hang accessories while you climb.

My vest kinda does, but that's because I have my IDPA patch sewn on the front....

Because of the ridiculous factor in public, I replace the vest with a short sleeve canvas shirt from cabelas (tall for extra length) and let it hang open with a T shirt underneath...

I'm in a "blue" state, so the norm around here is that 99.9% of the populace probably doesn't ever consider that someone might be carrying a GUN. It's also rather hot here in the summer months, but I have never been comfortable wearing untucked shirts, nor would I wish to carry a pistol against my hot, sweaty skin during the summer months. In temperate weather, if I'm in jeans I just wear a jeans jacket or jeans vest. In hot weather, a fisherman's type vest over a tee shirt works nicely and doen't raise any questions. Being in a dorky profession and needing glasses to read, I use the pockets and if anyone asks why the vest -- I point to the pockets full of glasses, sunglasses, pens, pencils, and notes to myself and simply point out that tee shirts ain't got pockets.

But ... nobody has ever asked.

Double Naught:

I try to spot accessories like a sure fire or extra mag because people often don't put as much effort into concealing them as they do their firearm. I don't do this out of paranoia but because it is fun.

Also, I am not saying that my opinions on the issue are entirely empirical, they are based largely on gut feelings. I know that 5.11 pants are easily recognized, but I live in a military town where many people are issued them, and many others simply wear them because they like them. I feel I can get away with wearing them without attracting any unwanted attention because of their ubiquity. However, I think that vests are usually worn as concealment garments. Not all the time, but usually. Some people can get away with wearing them without attracting much attention, but were I to do so people around here would probably either assume I was carrying, or posing as some spec ops operator.

In Texas, we basically have two seasons, summer and deer season :).

IMO, if you are wearing a vest, and you are not fly fishing, with a news team, or wearing it as part of a three piece suit, you are packing.

If you are wearing a fanny pack, and your wallet and Copenhagen can are in your back pockets, you have a cell phone on your belt, and a pack of cigs in your shirt pocket, you are packing.

With all of the holster options available today, and the myriad of cover garments to hide and break up weapon outlines, IMO there is no need to wear a vest or a fanny pack.

If I were to ever turn to a life of crime, everybody wearing a vest or a fanny pack would get whacked :).

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I was wearing camera vests before I was carrying a gun. The problem was that I had so much stuff stuffed into it I never could find anything quickly.;)

I stick with the unbuttoned camp or Aloha shirt instead of a vest. Fits more settings/situations. (especially with my lime green Crocs)

Vests may not scream "gun," but they sure do scream "Walter Sobchak"

In all seriousness, though, vests (and especially 5.11 types) are definitely out of place on today's man. Enough to arouse suspicion? Highly unlikely. But what's wrong with a light jacket, a zip-up style hooded sweatshirt, a sportcoat (cops have been doing it for ages), etc? Carhartt makes some great hooded jackets out of their duck material that are roomy enough to accomodate a shoulder rig and look good half-zipped.

If summer heat is an issue try some looser fitting cargo shorts (they breathe well as an added bonus) with a pocket-carry pistol. Worried about printing in your pocket? Just cut a rectangle of plastic (like from a heavier-duty report cover from Staples or Office Depot) and put it between your holster and the fabric of your garment. Presto change-o, your sidearm has gone from gun to PDA.*

There are so many CCW options beyond the fannypack and the vest.

*This one works. I've seen it in action and it's amazingly convincing.

I do the cotton t-shirt and untucked button-up over-shirt, myself. Cool in the heat and warm enough for mild chill. You can wear this about 2/3 of the year and not look out of place just about anywhere. Never gotten a second look with my Ted Blocker DA3 IWB and my P97DC isn't exactly thin or tiny by any stretch of the imagination. Just kneel instead of lean and you're all but invisible.

I spent $90 on my holster to spend $25 on my concealing garments,
Mark(psycho)Phipps( HAHAHA! )

it all depends.....

minnesota 80-% or so of the year, nope, as long as it is a carhartt or a stuffed down or fleecy thing. kids wear them to school, soccer moms live in them...the tactical 5.11 photo vests just scream NERD. yeah you might be the toughest SOB who ever walked the planet, but if the kids see you, you are a NERD in their eyes. And most kids here would prolly see that and make this sound "hack cough*narc* cough"

Walt Rauch,
Now you quit bringing common sense into the discussion. :p

Like the man say's "Experience outweighs speculation".

I think we have established locale, climate, how one carries themselves ...etc- goes a long was as to how vests and dressing around a CCW goes.

The other day one of the ladies that showed up is 22 y/o and single. She had for a Range Bag, a Diaper bag she bought for $4 , heavy construction, padded shoulder strap, cartoon characters and lots of neat pockets. Inside she had 3 handguns, ammo ear muffs, shooting glasses, you name it.

Her long guns in a kid's sized canvas Golf Bag. Her shotgun shells in a carboard box with the name of a Pediatric formula.

She has a baseball bat carrier too she uses

Since one of daddy's shirts seems to have "shrunk" , she stole it, real nice oxford shirt, with two shirt pockets. She wore this over a Pocket T shirt, concealed her CCW real well.

She looks just like a young mom toting all that crap around mom's do. or folks figure she has been babysitting a neice/nephew...

She got me that day, she reached into shell pouch and yelled "catch". I figured a bad shell or wrong guage...no she tossed me a binky.
'It was in the diaper bag in one of them pockets...'.:D

Funny is seeing a dog running around with a binky in mouth...

At least she tossed you a clean one!

When I worked LE in and around high rise projects, if the folks were merely irritated with you they tossed used diapers. If they were angry though, then bricks and whatever else they could heft up and over a balcony rail. but to stay on topic, this was not in response to the vest I was wearing(grin!)

As to what my response were to these, other than getting out of the way, I forget....

I like my new vest

it was kinda expensive but I needed pockets and more pockets
and it been over 90 so I need to conceal and have pockets for
all the things I like to have handy when driving a cab like reading glasses, flashlights different pockets for different bills pens, su glasses, cellphone
...oh yeah, my guns too!
I don't even stop to consider what other people think because I know
99.9% are unable too (think that is).

I carried in san francisco without a permit for long enough to get over any paranoia.
Even in a gun friendly town like Reno, no one ever thinks I'm carrying..unless I'm really , really obvious...I have a tee shirt with a picture of a gun that says "guns don't kill people , people with mustaches do"
I wear that shirt with my glock in a galco retention holster and the shirt covers the grip...oh & I have a mustache:evil:

So anyway, wear a vest if ye so choose, no one will be the wiser ...really...

Steve, you oughta see my pistol cases. A $3 used briefcase from a thrift shop with some foam stuck inside works just as well as a $40 case from a gun shop, plus it doesn't look as expensive, which is a benefit to me.

I like to keep a low profile.

Larry, that vest in the picture is what I meant by "goofy". I have no idea who would wear that, it looks like a retail uniform. All that is missing is a Walgreens or Walmart nametag.

Holy cow! That's brilliant! Sew a retail nametage type thing on there, and everyone will thing you are some poor underpaid sap on his way to/from work who not only doesn't have a gun, but who couldn't even afford a gun! As a bonus, BGs will think you must be so poor you aren't worth bothering.

In honor of this thread, I have taken my best khaki-colored, multi-pocketed photojournalist vest from my closet, and I shall be wearing it all week (over various full-size 1911s, of course) out and about in the Puget Sound region in an attempt to discern what sort of attention I may garner ...

So, fellow Evergreen Staters, should you see the handsome, middle-aged (with a full head of salt-and-pepper hair, I must add) and admirably fit man wandering the streets of Seattle, Tacoma and Bremerton this week sporting a well-fitted Woolrich vest, please offer a hearty "Hello." I'll also be wearing my Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses to make it easier for you ...

Will Old Dog survive???

Tune in next week to find out!

LMAO! :D

Seriously, a lot of this depends on where you are and more importantly, how you carry yourself. A vest won't do anything if you're walking around tugging at your side all day becasue you're so nervous about printing, and it won't exactly be a very diverting tactic with your Glock Logo baseball cap.
