Do you consider yourself a shooter or a collector?

If I could afford to be a collector, I'd probably have over 100 firearms. I have a few guns that haven't been shoot in 20+ yrs. They aren't "colectables", just old guns that my father and grandfather gave me.
Hell, I still have the first 22 rifle I was given when I was 7. I'm 56 so you know it's been around a while......;)

definitely a shooter. there is no gun that i would not shoot. unless of course, it was not safe to. i have no use for a safe queen. if i own it, it gets shot. period.

A "collection" just sounds much more special than what i see in my safe. They are more utilitarian/common...not what comes to my mind for collection.

Don't get me wrong! I like what I see and enjoy shooting all of them. Anyway...

NRA rag, American Rifleman? Whataya think?

Removed, accidentally started my own thread in this one. So, so sorry. But mistakes happen. I'll go put it where it belongs.

I answered this thread already though, I am a shooter. Going shooting today. Tend to look at arms more as tools than anything else. I LOVE looking at collector items, but most collectors keep things in perfect condition, perfect boxes, UNUSED... Couldn't do it as a kid, can't do it as an adult. I can be patient, it isn't really in me but I learned it, so when it comes to pastimes, I draw the line there --those have to be fun.

But to some degree, aren't we all collectors? If they are ONLY tools, then all you really need is the right tool for the job. Maybe a backup. I have a few tools, or weapons, that get very little use but are still used and looked at as collectibles.

However, if I did run across that few dollar double barrel at a garage sale worth $30,000, I certainly would get it --and never fire it. I'd like to have a few collector items, but mostly as investments.

Sorry for the initial hijack, it was TOTALLY unintended. Thanks for not giving me grief about it too.

I am a collector, but I also have rifles for no other reason then to just shoot...like a 10/22 and such.

The guns I buy now are to fill a hole in my collection, or for a specific reason....thinking about trying trap, so I will buy a gun just for that....but that is out of the norm...and if I don't care for it it will go to my boy, father in law or be sold.

I would not say that I am a don't touch that gun type guy....but I would say find out what you have first and if it is of value then leave it alone. Times change and that is why you don't see sporter G43's any longer. Same thing is going to happen with even the mosins that are one step up from run of the mill.

I have migated from shooter only to primarily collector. Being a history buff has driven this. I remember driving a long way (at the time) as a young guy to a large regional gun show specifically to find a .30-40 Krag as my first original antique. It was graceful and beautiful and shootable and sorta affordable and I bought the best quality/value I could find.

Since then I have bought many antiques going back as far as the 18th Century that really cannot be fired, a serial-numbered set where at least the high-grade model is not intended to be shot by anyone who doesn't live on "capital gains" income, and had guns custom made that I look at and say "this is just too beautiful to ever shoot," not that I necessarily wouldn't ever. But frankly I have enough "shooters" to keep me busy a lifetime! Examples?

I have an original US Civil War Pattern 58 Tower Musket. Could probably shoot it but I'll stick to the reproduction of it I have. I also have an original Springield Model 1842 musket. A shooter if you have faith. However, I'll stick to shooting the beautiful customized rifled version with long range sights (the later is also too beautiful to shoot but is -- ever fire .69 caliber Minie Balls? Woo hoo!).

It waxes and wains. I'm in a shooter mode now, buying shooting guns and loading lots of ammo. I'm sure the $$ safe queen mode will swing by again.

Right now I'm in accumulator mode. I'm trying to get one example of each type of firearm that intrigues me.

I have to hurry a bit, because many of the more interesting guns are getting scarce.

The next problem will be to find a place to try out - and practice with - these accumulated guns.

I only own one firearm that I will never fire. It is a 69 cal brown bess pattern musket and, I just dont want to clean the stinky thing.

I am a collector of shooters. I have never bought a gun as an investment to be squirreled away never to be shot to hopefully appreciate in value.

With that said I have more guns than I need and I like to acquire guns that have some "historical" significance or interest, at least to me, or have a reputation for being very good/accurate shooters. For example, I am trying to acquire one gun of each model of SIG, the old school German-made ones, that interest me, including a Swiss-made SIG P210. But I would also like to get a WWII era 1911, an older Colt Python, a Luger P08 (though I might not shoot it as much since I have heard they are not that accurate?), and maybe a few others that might tickle my fancy that I don't know about yet - but as shooters.

Of course some/most of those guns are fairly expensive, maybe because they are collectables :D, so I will have to save up my money and look for deals, but I am not in a hurry and I won't be disappointed if I never complete my "collection".
