I suppose one would eat an antelope or impala, but what about some of the other game that people go after? Do those of you that hunt Africa eat, for example, cape buffalo? Or are those kinds of hunts just a hunt for the thrill and the trophy?

All of the animals killed in Africa are eaten. Protien is not wasted in Africa. Cape Buffalo tastes just like well....Beef.

Elephants are eaten, Giraffes are eaten, Hippos eaten.

Everything is eaten.

By locals usually as you are not allowed to bring meat back into the country.

They are hunted for the thrill and the trophy as well as the economic benifits that they provide to the indiginous peoples.

I concur with what H&H wrote. I personally have eaten kudu (not mine, probably an earlier hunter's), gemsbok (mine, and it was very nice as minute steaks and stroganoff), and impala (grilled tenderloins--very tasty). The only animal that I understand is not very palatable is the waterbuck. Since I'm hoping to get one soon, I'll let you know what happens to it.

Nico,

Alrighty then....

If you want to eat a heyna go for it dude!.... you do realize that a heyna is not a dog at all? They are most closely related to a mongoose. I have never heard of anyone eating either a mongoose or it's giant cousine the hyena. But if it trips your trigger....

Then we'll sit down together and have a bigole plate of coyote chops and some skunk stew..

So in fact NO everything that is killed is not eaten.

Lion however is eaten by the locals as they believe it increases your strength both in and out of the bed room.

I've eaten Mt lion many times. It tastes just like pork. I assume that african lion is close to the same. I have never heard of anyone eating leopard either.

Just the thought of eating a heyna though:barf: :barf: :barf:

DUDE..:D

I doubted that anyone ate hyena, but you never know

I'm sure that if you were hungry enough.... :what:

I would say that some of the early African tribes ate anything, the bushmen for instance would eat things that would turn most stomachs.

Kudu,

You do have a point there. In fact I'll bet most hyenas probably think twice before eating a bushman. Considering what those bushmen will eat.:D

Considering what we see of Africans on tv (and I'll admit that that may very well not even be close to the actual health of the typical African) I'd think that that it would make you feel pretty good to help feed them.

Granted, I'd kind of like to try elephant, giraffe and hippo myself as long as I knew it was coming from a source that had hunted it ethically (meaning not having killed one that was particularly endangered).

Maybe you could put a link to your thread regarding your recent trip to africa on this thread? I think sargeant sabre would find it very informative - I know I did - it made me feel a lot more comfortable with the state of big game hunting in (at least some parts of) Africa.

edit, I found it, never mind. Sargeant sabre read through this whole thing and I think you'll be greatly enlightened.

Very good post. I figured somebody ate those animals. It just seemed like Elephant, Cape Buff, Hippo, and the like would be awfully tough meat. I'm glad that the hunting feeds the locals.

Hippo is supposed to be pretty good, at least, if made into hams. Teddy Roosevelt even sent some to friends back in the US. Of course, laws were different then, and he was the "just ex"-president...

Lone Star

The Cape buffalo I had was tough enough to bend the tines on a fork.

Sable was OK, but not the best. Ditto for gemsbok.

Klipspringer was good, impala was good, tsessebe was good, but hands-down, no question, the absolute BEST African game I ever tasted was bushbuck.

As far as hyena . . . the skinners wouldn't even skin it in the usual area, as they didn't want it contaminating the place where they skin animals they EAT.

Elephant heart - very tasty.

Impala tenderloin - YUM!

Impala and Gemsbok liver wrapped in bacon - DOUBLE YUM!

Hippopotamus stroganoff - to die for!!!

Other antelope - ranging from good to very good.

Wildebeest - OK, but nothing special.

Buffalo - think beefalo, they're pretty close.

Crocodile, pofadder, mamba - taste like chicken... :D

One magazine story I read, they at least tried some of the meat from everything they shot. They shot a lot.

* The one they REALLLY regretted was Zebra. They recommended no one try it.

<Flame Suit On>

I have to say, compared to the typical Taiwanese, the American stomach is about as weak as it gets..

Short of Papaya's and Durians (because the smell makes me barf, not want to barf, but actually barf)

I haven't really found anything short of raw monkey brains that I don't eat.

Locusts with honey? Locusts deep fried? Yum..

Alligator jerky? One of my favorites. Ostrich steaks? God's gift to man.

I'm still waiting for someone to list something I don't/wouldn't eat..

How about the poison of the Habu snake?

habu.jpg

Would you drink it?

We did in Sasebo, Japan

Ostrich is outstanding, by the way. Tastes almost like beef. Korean "mystery meat on a stick" from street vendors in Pohang isn't as bad as one might think, either.

Snake meat soup, a favorite of mine since I was 4. Snake blood, gall bladder juice, and venom? Been there done that. Come to taiwan, I will take you to a street full of it..

btw.. snake meat is the traditional "viagra" of the orient..
