Do you feel offended if seller asks for a copy of CHL for record when doing FTF?

Yes it is; look at my ID all you want, but take a photo or copy my info? No. And that includes doing the same to my DL as well.

On the one hand, I want to see a CHL (CCW), to be sure this isn't some wack-o. OTOH, If you want to keep records, become a CPA.

Doesn't prevent it from being reported. But I believe it's illegal to file a false police report. You report a gun stolen, I've got a signed receipt from you. Should put me in the clear.

You have no way of knowing if the person you got the receipt from was the owner.

I’ve only bought a few guns from people I didn’t know FTF. Typically much older men. A S&W 29-1, Interarms Mannlicher 308, and a CZ 455. The first was from an officer from another town. The last two were from a man in his 80’s. The older gentleman wanted to see my DL and wrote out a bill of sale. Didn’t bother me in the least. I can see why some buyers and/or sellers would be hesitant to show an ID. But in my particular case, it was no problem.

I have a few handguns I want to sell in near future, shipping handgun is too expensive and only FFL can ship USPS (with Priority Flat Rate Box) but not many FFLs would do outbound transfers, many times only small gun shops and they charge outbound FFL fee much higher. FTF seems to be the only other option. When I sell a firearm not going thru FFL, I would want to sell to CHL holders only and I would like to keep a record, will folks give a copy of their CHLs to sellers or allow taking a picture, when doing FTFs? or it is too much to ask?
The legal requirement usually is for you to know that you're not selling to a prohibited person, and a resident of your state. There is no requirement for you to keep evidence of this.
As long as the buyer is not prohibited by law from owning a firearm, yes, person to person transactions are completely legal in Ohio and no background checks are necessary.
For the above, not sure how you would know this..the buyer is not a 'prohibited' person..I'd want to keep some sort of record..who, proper resident, type thing but..again, how would you know the gent isn't 'prohibited' in Ohio? W/O a BGC?

People used to be more comfortable with having PPI recorded by "strangers", but are much more aware of the identity theft issues and can be very reluctant today.

I ask for a CHL, but I just write the person's name down since any carry permit can be checked against the name by authorities easily if there is an issue. If you're shipping you have a lot of PPI anyway.

doesn't tell you he is a criminal or crazy

Let's be clear on what the requirement is. The seller is obligated to inquire if a buyer is a prohibited person. That means the seller needs to ask, not assume the buyer is not prohibited. In most states you aren't required to verify this or to record the information, but it is the seller's responsibility to ask. It is good practice to keep a record of what you've sold and to who and a note that you asked if they were prohibited and any documentation you got for this (verified carry permit, shipped to FFL, etc) simply as a precaution against getting a call from authorities trying to trace a firearm. I've had this happen once. A carry permit is a good way to do this or the name/address of the FFL it was shipped to, but it is simply best practice instead of requirement.

As a buyer, buying a handgun from an unknown party (remember, you're as suspect to me as I am suspect to you) the LAST thing I'm doing is allowing you or providing a copy for you of my DL or carry permit. Both have my address on them, and I'm not going to give my address to someone I don't know, with him now knowing there are guns at that address.
MN has no photo on the permit, so I will hold up my DL with my address covered with my thumb and name exposed so you can see it's a MN DL and it's me by the photo. I will then show you the permit with the name exposed and address covered so you can verify the permit is mine.
That's as far as I'll go.

That said, it's up to you. Your gun, your terms, but it may limit the number of buyers. I would recommend stating your requirements in any ad you post, like armslist, just so you and the potential purchaser are not wasting one another's time.
