Its far less of a pain to buy long guns here in NY also ( though I'm sure not so much so as in Belgium like the above poster ). Still though, I have more handguns than long guns. I just never had that much interest in rifles for whatever reason.
More long guns for me at the moment (24 vs 9 handguns). I use them more for hunting, and when I first got my C&R I snapped up tons of the cheaper bolt actions from surplus sales.
Lately though, I've found myself just more content to take the handguns to the range. Smaller, easier to pack, ammo is cheaper (though I go through more of it), and overall I just have more fun with the handguns. I think my longgun collection is missing maybe 3-4 pieces (and could probably loose 10 out of what it has without me being too upset) and then I'll be done. My handgun wishlist is a mile long .
The oddest thing for me though is that for ammo, I'm completely opposite between the two. If I get a chambering of a particular round in a rifle, I don't want another. Once I have one .243 that's - if I buy another rifle it better be in something different. For handguns, I'm opposite. Though my collection is a bit varied (currently 9mm Luger, .45 ACP, .22LR, 7.62x25, and 9mm Mak), in general anything new that I look at is ALWAYS in 9mm Luger. Again, I think the shooting fun and convenience comes into play, and I've just found that I like it a lot more when I can just lug fewer types of ammo out to the range.
Started out primarily a handgun guy. I had my HD pump shotgun but that was it for long guns. Then somehow, I started adding rifles to the mix -- handguns still out number long guns and will for a while, but I'm working on evening out the gap
