Do you have to be fingerprinted to get a CCW?

Absolutely... In California. Of course permits are only issued on the good graces of the establishment. On the other hand, what is the point of a permit if there is no background check?

That decision is left up to the local Circuit Court in Virginia. For instance, the City of Richmond used to, but doesn't anymore.

I had them done for a Florida permit, I went down to the base security office (I worked on a Naval base during summer/winter breaks to pay for college), when the nice girl that took my prints absolutely dumped the special soap on my hands, I couldnt get the bathroom door open with just two fingers (as the soap was very slick), so I had to use my whole hand to grab the door knob. I wonder if the big black smudge has come off the knob yet.

(in all honesty, I tried to get the smudge off the knob, but it just wouldnt wash off)

Don't know about...

for a CCW here in Hawaii (no one has ever been issued one appearantly) but you have to be fingerprinted before the mommy-state grants you the priviledge of even owning a long gun. Before acquiring any long gun you have to apply for a permit to acquire (two week wait from submit to get). It is good for one year and covers all the shotguns and rifles you want to acquire (except those evil ole assault weapons of course). After you purchase the gun you

For handguns you have to pay for the gun (store retains gun), take the receipt down to the main police station, fill out 6 different forms, wait two weeks, go back to the station to pick up your permit, go to gunshop pick up gun, go back to station with gun and permit, and register the gun. You have to do this for each and every handgun purchase.

This process of course leads to some ridiculous possible scenerios. If you decide to purchase a gun, let's say a nice little polymer wonder in .40S&W, go through the hoops, get the permit, and go to pick up your gun. While in the gunshop you notice a nice .22 target pistol for a good deal price, you would still have to wait the full 2 weeks to be able to take possession of the mousegun while the mommy-state ckecked you out to see if you're okay to have the .22. Nevermind the fact that they've just spend 2 weeks and decided you are okay to possess a firearm that will put much bigger holes into anything you shoot it at...they still need to check you out again.

The one saving grace in this disgraceful situation is that you only have to do the fingerprinting (with the $24 charge) one time.

[/on sarcasm]... Lucky we live Hawaii.... [/off sarcasm]

Oregon requires fingerprints. Electronically taken. Pretty neat.

What's the big deal? You have to submit thumb prints every time you buy a weapon with a 4473. Bank where you don't normally do business require a thumbprint.

The government has had my fingerprints since I went into the military, like 30 years ago.

I just don't care. The police, ATFE, FBI all know where I live.

I haven't gotten that far into the new Ohio law (144 pages ! ! ! ) but I THINK it will be required here.

Short version....Depends, it is on a state-by-state basis.

"Just read a post which noted that anyone obtaining a CCW (in that state) had to be fingerprinted. I guess I'm ignorant, but I didn't realize this was part of the program. How common is this? It offends me that demonstrably law-abiding citizens are subjected to treatment normally reserved for criminals (or federal employees)."

How are we supposed to check to verify who you are and that you are a law abiding person without fingerprinting you?

Huh? I'm not aware of this one... and you'd think I'd know by now. Now, if you mean just by handling the form they get thumb prints it's time to take the tinfoil hat off.

Then again... I might put on gloves someday when filling one out just to freak the guy at the counter out.
