Do you like Dick's Sporting Goods?

Occasionally a good buy can be had on rifles, shotguns and ammo, but they have no handguns or carry gear, which are my real firearms passion. Although the rest of the store is well stocked with various sports gear, I am not "into" any of those sports.

I liked Galyan's (now defunct and bought out by Dick's) a lot better. :(
Yeah, I really liked Galyans when they were in my area. They built an awesome two story store that was well stocked with everything. Dick's bought them out and consolidated everything into the same mediocre selection that the rest of the store's have.

i tried typing "dicks sporting goods" into my web browser address, guess what came up

anyway, i did find 45acp ammo at dick's when i couldn't find it anywhere else during the recent idiotic obama ammo frenzy. not as cheap as walmart, but not a rip like gander mountain.

buy some howard leight ear plugs there too. other than that i have no use for them. their clothes prices are a rip, and gun selection sucks.

Of all the "chain store" types, Dicks is the sorriest excuse for a gun store.

Bass Pro is OK, barely.

The W store will never see any of my Social Security money.

I spend my money at the various Mom and Pop local gun stores.

Dick's is not the place to shop if you need any advice or information. In fact, IMHO I would never seek gun information from any store/gun shop/sales person. It is very unlikely that they will have as much information as you could gather from a GOOGLE search. I find they have good prices on new guns. Also, you can order many guns without any shipping costs, ask to look at their ordering book the next time you go there. I got a Stevens 200 in 30-06 there last year for 219.00.

In a word......NOPE!!!

I went in there with a friend that wanted to buy a new rifle. The clerk was so confused as to what they had, and frankly seemed so disinterested in waiting on us, that we left. Had to be the worst clerk ever born.

I don't shop Dick's for any gun related stuff. Four reasons:

1. Dick's does not sell handguns, but sells handgun ammo. This is the height of hypocrisy.

2. Dick's ammo pricing is deceptive. They are always advertising great deals on shotgun shells. However, they come 20 rounds to a box. Who ever heard of that? Maybe there is a new clays game that I haven't heard of that only comprises 20 rounds?

3. They always examine your ID when selling ammo. Also, they carry your purchase to the checkout counter while you follow along behind (the walk of shame). To me this practice, at age 62, is demeaning and ridiculous.

4. The long guns that they do sell I can get elsewhere at better prices and get waited on by someone who actually knows something about guns other than airsoft.

they just give it to me to carry to the register. guess it depends which dicks you're at. that certainly would be demeaning.

I avoid them whenever possible.

They have no handguns and virtually nothing handgun related.

The Galyon's chain hit the Cleveland area just in time to be bought by and ruined by Dick's.

Why do I think posts like these are done by advertising agencies or corporate personnel to get a feel as to how their stores fare?

So what? You can't do that for Cabelas or Bass Pro Shop either, but I get flyers and catalogs from them all the time that do list firearms.

Cabela's has their gun library online where you can view many of the guns in stock

No. I don't. I was trying out a new club at Dicks and one of the salesmen told me I was dropping my rt shoulder as I started my swing. I ended up not buying anything but an over priced box of balls......But he had bigger ones. He tried to charge me for a golf lesson! I could almost see that IF I'd asked for his opinion or help but I didn't. He was right about my swing though lol. I didn't pay for a lesson either.

Like Gander and some others, they will occasionally have smoking deals on ammo, through a week-long sale, but it is almost impossible to know when, without getting their weekly circular.

Other than sales, they don't offer much for me to be interested. I don't actually think I've ever bought a single thing from them, but I stop by when I'm in the area.

There is a Dick's sporting goods in town but I haven't been there in maybe 5 years. If I remember right they are kind of expensive.

Good prices on .22 occasionally - BUT - often have to get a rain check.

ETA: And on shotgun slugs and very rarely buckshot. Shot shell prices usually seem competitive.

The Gun Library is strictly for used guns that are, as they say, for the "discriminating sportsman". This means it does not include their new inventory or the stuff you would find at your local pawn shop.

"Cabela's Gun Library® offers the discriminating sportsman and firearm enthusiast an exceptional selection of classic antique, collectible and fine sporting firearms."

discriminating = firearm enthusiasts with enough discretionary income to be able to afford to pay their outrageous prices.

The one here is in a big mall that has "no gun" signs on the door. Since I can't go in the mall, I've never bothered to wonder what they sell or how much they want for it. I suppose the store has an outside entrance so you don't have to go IN the mall, but who cares? There are other options, even for big box stores.

Nope. The hypocrisy of stores that sell rifles but not handguns, but are willing to make a profit off handgun ammo, just doesn't set right with me.....so I respond with the hypocrisy of going in there only when they have a 380 or 9mm sale. :)
