Hey pallies. The thread title pretty much says it. Do you like Pearlite grips on any of your pistolas?

Pallie? Pallie???

NO, I don't even like real pearl grips.
They are fragile, slick, and cold.

And I dislike plastic imitation Pearlite grips even more.
Because they don't even look like real pearl grips.

You know what General Patten said about pearl grips don't you?

[about his pistol grips]
Patton: They're ivory.
Only a pimp from a cheap New Orleans whorehouse would carry a pearl-handled pistol.

Yes, well, or at least allegedly said. Hence that option for fun. ;)

They look ok on certain things. Never as nice as a good piece of wood with a lot of grain and a nice finish, but much better than rubber or black plastic. They do wonders for dressing up cheaper SAA guns like the rough rider, and look ok when paired up to old school Iver Johnsons and such.

I have a set of real mother of pearl colt grips for a 1911 sitting in a drawer, not on my 1911.

I voted with General George, but I do prefer nice wood grips. I will admit that I do have a set of black pearlite grips on a Colt Frontier 22 that I bought when I was a teenager back in the 1950’s.

Never cared for Pearlite grips. Look too much like cheap plastic, like those plastic stag grips. Had the real thing on a nickel plated Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless and it looked great but the grips themselves were very thick and heavy, somewhat slippery, and way too fragile for everyday use.

In Fort Knox Kentucky there is a collection of Patton memorabilia. Among the many firearms are two handguns with pearl grips. A small Remington and a small Colt if I recall correctly.

Perhaps Patton forgot what he said.

Tacky, lame, cheap looking, terrible compliment to any pistol......

Wood grips for me thank you very much.

I have made it a point to avoid any synthetic material on my guns. Most are stocked with some type of hardwood, do have a few stocked with elk stag. Never been able to afford ivory.

Not too sure about real mother of pearl, from what I hear it is not a good grip material.

I did this set up just for fun. Sadly it's not much fun to shoot this way.

They can look good on the right gun. Ivory will look better though. Neither are my thing.

I would've agreed with Patton until I saw Tom Threepersons' gorgeous Colt SAA. It had a beautifully worn nickel finish with a soft, brushed luster and a set of damned fine looking pearl grips. IMHO, they can look right nice on the right sixgun but I do prefer ivory.

Here's a nice one I found:

Along with Threepersons, others who have favored the pearl grip include, Frank Hamer, William Barclay Masterson, Bill Tilghman and several others who's names I have forgotten. Not sure if GSP would have made the comment in front of any of them.

Real mother of pearl is beautiful, but very delicate and easily cracks or chips, especially around screw holes, and has even been known to happen as a result of recoil. Genuine MOP worked pretty well on one piece SAA grips because there were no screw holes. As for imitation pearl, I'm with most everyone else... no thanks. I'm old enough to remember plastic toilet seats from the 50's and 60's made from the same material!

Hideous to behold and embarrassing for the owners.

It is only suitable for toilet seats and vintage economy folding knives..

Not at all.

To me:

They look like pooh.

Feel as fake as they look.

Smack of pretense!

And I love's me some authentic pearl grips.

Patton, in his gigantic, fragile glass house should not have been casting that particular stone.

Todd.
