Do you own a 2nd or 3rd copy of your EDC?

As a general rule I don’t buy dupes. While I don’t carry everyday I do have a half dozen or so PPKs and PPK/S of different variations two of which are my favorite carry pistols.

Similar but not identical.

S&W 642 and 442

Colt Mustang and Kimber Micro

H&K P30SK V3 and LEM triggers.

I carry a Kimber Custom Classic M1911-style .45. Before I bought that gun, about 25 years ago I carried an M1927 Argentine -- an M1911 made in Argentina on Colt machinery, under Colt supervision -- basically a 1930s Colt made the way Colt used to make them. Nowadays, the Argentine is my understudy gun -- it wears a Colt Service Ace .22 conversion kit.

I do. Three G42s; one for carry, one for dry fire, one for weekly range. They get swapped out monthly. I do have a couple of G26s that one rides in my car and one in a go bag.

As far as revolvers, all my snubbies take the same speed loaders and speed strips. J Frames, LCRs, and Tauri’s. They all fit in the same generic snub nose leather holsters I have.

I have downsized quite a bit lately. Having moved and coming to grips (pun) with my hand issues. Moving more to 22lr pistols and rifles. But still like to try new stuff, but doubt I will buy double if anything else.

After attending a Sig Academy course (mid 2000s?) with a Special Forces guy (+State and Local Police) I took on a new outlook to EDC/all guns. His outlook was that they were tools to be used and he should be able to pick up any firearm and use it effectively. At this shotgun class he used a range provided 870 and a Sig 226 (non-DAK) and was near the top of the class. So since then, I routinely switch carry guns. I make a trip to the range and put 50-100 rounds through the gun I'm going to carry and then carry it for a while. I have my favorites, S&W CSX & CS45 and my newest Taurus 856 Defender 3". I carry 185gr Critical Defense in the CS45 because it is hard for me to shoot well with heavy recoil. I reload 9mm, 40 S&W, 45 ACP and 38spl for practice ammo. My goal is accuracy with reasonable "stopping power" over flinching LOL. I follow the thought process that "stopping power" is more about rounds on target making the aggressor stop/retreat than it is dropping them dead in their tracks with one shot.

Totally agree with his thinking. I dont switch up carry guns though. Same gun, same place, every day.

I do regularly practice with a lot of different guns of different types of guns, just to stay on top of them and maybe try and learn something new. And unless theres something mechanically wrong, I dont modify or upgrade triggers, etc, and shoot basically box stock guns.

Not yet, but I'm going to pick one up this weekend before the sale on them is off.
$299 Gx4 Taurus at Fleet Farm until Mar. 5th, in case anyone else is interested.

Update: Instead of a non TORO Gx4, I'm going to get a TX-22 Compact. They have the TORO cutout, and would make a pretty good .22 trainer version of the Gx4.

For my Glocks I have extra slides all tested to run as they go to the range often and will interchange on my ccw guns.Or just pick up any other of my Glocks, same nomenclature and carry one of those.

What I consider to be my primary gun in that regard is part of what I collect. So I have one more of the same model (but I cannot as of now bring myself to modify it). I have a duplicate of a different manufacturer (patent expired) in the repertoire as well. I didn't get the others with that in mind, but I like that design. What can I say?

My secondary carry gun is much the same. I have several of these - same manufacturer, same caliber.

However, like many commenters, I am really not worried about having an arm fall into disability due to wear. Nor do I worry too much about having one 'retained' in an investigation. May the Lord protect me from such event; I know what I can do - and can't; I know how to articulate my actions; and I do have a fall-back plan.

I do have multiples, but honest wear isn't a concern nor is having a gun in police evidence. I carry what works for me and that is also one of my favorite handguns from a historical and collecting standpoints. Since I'm a Hi Power fan and the HP points like I was born with one my carry gun is a very expensive customized HP.

Yes and no in revolvers.

I carry small frame revolvers when in a revolver mood (about one or two days a week). For me, shooting and carrying any two small frame revolvers of the same barrel length is a very similar experience. The difference in how my Taurus 856UL and S&W 442 shoots is very small, and likely no greater than the experience between two different S&W 442s would be (there is always variation from gun to gun). In carry, a 15-20oz gun feels very similar to me IWB so my steel Taurus 85CH, and aluminum 442 and 856UL feel very similar (the differences are in the bobbed hammer of the 85CH and enclosed hammer 442 vs. the exposed hammer 856), and aren't even that different from my Colt D-frame (in my case a 3" new model King Cobra). For pocket carry, the smaller dimensions of the 442 are noticeable over the 6 shot 856UL, but both are quite pocketable. So, I very much do have functional spares in this category, and I will likely add a Taurus 856 Defender or 905 Defender (9mm) so I have a pair of 3" small frame revolvers.

No true spares for autos (for the most part), but I have some functional spares.

I have multiple carry guns, or guns I intended to be carry guns, in different sizes for different needs. That worked when I couldn't carry much and only carried about once a month when out of state on a non-resident permit. Now that I could finally get a MD permit post-Bruen, I find that I've narrowed down the pistols I actually carry, and I'm thinking strongly of getting a spare (either a true spare, or second in the same category/functional spare).

I'm phasing out my M&P40c, that middle ground between 10+ round micro-9 and compact service pistol just doesn't work for me. It is big and heavy enough over the micro-9 that I don't like carrying it over my SIG P365, and it isn't small enough over my CZ PCR or Glock 19 to carry any advantage over just carrying the bigger gun. I do have functional spares in the compact service pistol category: a CZ PCR, a CZ P01, a CZ 75 Compact (steel, only a range gun, but the practice carries over nicely to the aluminum versions), and a Glock 19. Even with the weight difference between the PCR/P01 and the G19, I find very little difference in ease of carry on my belt. For range practice, my full sized CZ 75B and full sized Glock 22 are close enough in experience to the PCR/P01 and G19 for the range practice to transfer over well. If something ever happens to one, I'm still well covered (even if I sell one of the compact CZs), and I can get plenty of practice without dirtying my carry gun.

I need to do similar for my SIG P365. I don't clean my range guns often, I want to shoot my carry regularly, and I don't want to carry a dirty gun. That alone is a good argument for a second 10+ round Micro-9 (one to carry, one to shoot, and switch off every couple months). Further, my Taurus 856 recently experienced my first squib load, one that partially remained in the cylinder and was partially in the barrel, locking up the gun. I didn't want to look down the barrel of a loaded gun while removing the squib, so I left it with a gunsmith to deal with. If I didn't have the choices in small framed revolvers I already mentioned, I'd be without a lightweight snub for pocket carry, but I wasn't. I realize, if something puts my P365 out of commission, while I certainly could carry a larger gun for an extended time, I'd rather have the choice of my preferred carry size while waiting for it to be fixed. The only thing I haven't decided for sure is if I get another P365, or if I get a Shield Plus, G43x, or G48. Just when I think I've about decided, I start thinking about the alternative. So, I'm still unsure if I'm getting a spare, or just a functional spare.

I have a S&W M&P 40 compact, (the 1.0) that I EDC the most. I’ve had that one for over ten years. Just as the pandemic started I saw a great deal online for an identical one. I bought it in case something should happen to the first one. S&W is now on the 2.0 and over time parts beyond springs and pins might become hard to get.

When I sent the slide recently to get milled for a RMR I still had my EDC.

C233A58F-3DA7-4DBF-BFEF-3CC77198E234.jpeg Thanks for all the great replies everyone. From what I read here I decided to get a second copy of my EDC. Although not 100% identical. I changed up the grip a bit so I could try a BK grip and too see if that style of grip would conceal better in a pocket.

The stainless steel model in the picture is my daily driver. The black nitride is the new guy getting broken in before he is allowed out on the road.

EDC is a Shield Plus PC, back up is a Shield 1.0 with the Hyve Technologies +2 mag extension to at least get it to 10 rounds.
The two shoot slightly differently, Shield Plus PC has a much nicer trigger but the Shield 1.0 has worn in so it's decent too.

So, a change from my post 2 weeks ago...

Still don't have 2 of the exact same model revolver, but a small frame DA revolver is basically functionally the same even if it isn't an exact duplicate and I have several.

Again, in the compact service pistols I have a CZ PCR and Glock 19 I carry, two options that cover the same niche, but not really the same (the P01 I'm about to put on consignment in a little over a week while I'm off work is closer to a true copy of my PCR).

My most carried gun, my SIG P365 now has a duplicate, as of yesterday when I bought a 2nd P365 (though this is MD, I have to wait until Friday to pick it up due to a 7 day waiting period). The new one has the OD green distressed finish. Not that I'm a fan of a mechanically distressed finish, but it was $20 cheaper, and it will be easy to tell at a glance which one is the one I've been carrying (to be less likely to screw up and have a ND when dry firing, and to know when it is time to switch off which is the one going to the range and which is the one being carried).

My carry gun is a hammerless S&W 642, with a 3" barrel, and it's the only one I've ever seen. It's a discontinued model. I have never seen another one for sale. The 2"-barreled models are everyhwere, but it would be hard to find another 3-incher, I suspect.

I don't have exact copies of any of my guns. However, for (most) of my guns, I have copies of their purpose. For example, both an LCP and LCR for pocket carry, multiple shotguns for home defense, etc.
