Everyday shooting practice with defensive loads - at c. 75 cents a round - is just too expensive. I shoot just enough to verify functioning and accuracy and use "generic" ball for the rest.

I do think you should select a defensive load with as close to the same recoil characteristics as possible to the practice load. If this cannot be done - e.g., you practice with .45/230 FMJ but your carry load is a +P - you can shoot a magazine (or cylinder) load of the carry ammo for familiarization.

I couldn't possibly afford to, IF I could even find any more.

I practice almost exclusively with my lead bullet handloads. In fact, I bought replacement barrels for my two Glocks last year just so that I could shoot lead bullets in them.

Not me!
My carry ammo is Double Tap .40 cal 155 g.

But that's the most economical carry ammo around, and excellent too, BTW.

I don't practice with my carry ammo, but I do sight-in with it on all my CTC-equipped pistols.

I practice with range (non-SD) ammo but run a couple of mags of SD ammo thru the pistols at least twice a month.

Yes, but only once or twice a year when it is time to replace the carry ammo. I'll do so to make sure the carry gun can still chew through a full magazine of HPs without any issues.

Technically then, no, I practice with range ammo.

I've shot maybe 10 rounds. Just can't justify shooting Hydrashock into a paper target.

I only get to the range about once a month, but once I get there I unload the mag that is in the gun and the spare mag that I carry on a daily basis. I need to know that my gun and it's ammo will work after a month of being carried. After those two mags i shoot the target loads.
