Everyday shooting practice with defensive loads - at c. 75 cents a round - is just too expensive. I shoot just enough to verify functioning and accuracy and use "generic" ball for the rest.
I do think you should select a defensive load with as close to the same recoil characteristics as possible to the practice load. If this cannot be done - e.g., you practice with .45/230 FMJ but your carry load is a +P - you can shoot a magazine (or cylinder) load of the carry ammo for familiarization.
