Do you prefer revolvers for one purpose and Semi's for another?

My S&W 629 6" is set up for handgun hunting. I carry a J frame as a BUG and my semi auto .45 is my normal carry gun in most conditions.

Out of curiosity, what do you do for a living? Sounds neat.

Mineral exploration. I stake mining claims, collect soil and rock samples, even fence abandoned mine shafts. Except for the fencing, all of my work is away from roads, paths or trails. Sometimes desert [carrying my cougar gun], sometimes dense forest [carrying my bear gun]. Most days it seems that the "end of the trail" is where I start heading up the hill with a backpack, tools and my dog.

I have never quite understood the rationale behind using a revolver for some things and then declaring it not enough gun for other tasks. Perhaps this shows a bit of naivete on my part, but it occurs to me that if 5 to 8 rounds of something is adequate protection from wild beasties that are probably stronger and faster than two-legged goblins, why is that not enough for urban carry?

I personally have decided that 6 rounds of .357 Magnum is sufficient firepower for both woods and the urban jungle -- at least, it's sufficient to allow me to fight my way back to my long gun. I like the power of .357 Magnum, and I like wheelguns better. That is strictly personal preference.

If you prefer 16 rounds of 9mm, then you should go for that. :)

I would keep in mind the fact that, at least in a self-defense situation, any handgun is really just a compromise for size and portability. If you knew you were going into a gunfight, any handgun would be a backup.

But of course, if you were going into a gunfight, you could probably avoid it.

I think its a matter of concealment for me. The M&P9c is pretty small and (hopefully) easy to conceal. Whereas a Smith or Ruger 4 inch .357 wouldn't disappear as easily (or at least I don't think it would).

At home I have a battery of revolvers available with great HD loads hidden in various locations, not to mention assorted rifles for longer distance shots across several rooms if necessary. On the street, I generally carry only one gun on my person. So magazine capacity and speed of reloading counts. Thus, the Beretta 92FS for carry, and revolvers like the 29 and rifles like the SAR-1 at home.

I have a Model 10 that I can shoot well in a coma. I keep it next to the bed. In low light, I want the natural pointer.

During the day, I usually carry a P3AT. Sometimes a Makarov or a PA-63 but usually the little one. Compared to a similarly sized revolver, the semi delivers more rounds. They're flat, too.

I think it is like Clint Smith says; a revolver in a reasonable caliber is really no less gun than an automatic that holds more bullets. It's more about the training you're willing to undergo to learn the ins and outs of the weapon. Like I said, I am personally a wheelgun kind of person. I will probably own and carry an auto-loader someday, but for now my .357 is doing the job.

Because you never see bears attacking three or four on one ?

Revolvers do great against black and brown bears. I'd love to know what autoloader cartridge will take them down though.

Two legged threats though, they can and do hunt in packs. Just a thought on the subject. Actually, autoloaders work against pack hunters of any kind.

I never even fired a revolver until i was an adult, so I count on SA's for virtually all my handgun needs. I do have a S&WMod60 that was an ankle gun for a while. I'd like to get a revolver in .357mag(preferably a 3in)that I could keep in my truck just in case. So I guess I count on revolvers for back ups that arn't going to get as much care as a regular carry gun.

All my .22 Caliber Pistols are Revolvers, auto loaders have no soul.
S&W .22/32 6" Target with a BOD of 1938 (Hierloom)
S&W Model 63-4 (The new 8 shot in SS)

For social work I prefer auto loaders in 9MM or .40 (XD or Glock)
I'm a south paw so the Church of 1911 is lost to me.
