I'm primarily a revolver fan, and generaly shoot better with them, however I am looking for an automatic to round out my options and for higher capacity as well as easier ammo management/reloads.

My first venture into semi-autos was a HK USP .45, which I struggle to shoot well, and am not comfortable with for that reason.

Now, I am looking into other options.
A range rental has shown me that the Glock pistols which I long disliked, are much easier to shoot than the USP was for me, I think it's in part due to the grip angle that is similar to my revolvers.
I also am drawer to the 1911 design, mostly due to the "old fashioned" design, all metal construction, and comfortable ergos, it seems like a logical upgrade from a revolver.

Of these, which do you feel is better suited for a "revolver guy"???
Any other sugustions???

Thanks.

I think the question would be to figure out what you like about revolvers and look for similar attributes in a semi.

Size?
Materials?
Trigger?
Sights?

I'm going to guess that authoritative chunk of metal and trigger feel are pretty high up on the charts. Although I am a die hard 1911 fan, I feel obliged to point out they have very different trigger feel than any revolver you will have ever shot.

I would suggest looking at a metal frame Sig or DAO 3rd generation Smith if you can find one. Nice rolling triggers. Good hefty metal frames.

You checked out a Glock. I would say 1911 but maybe you should rent one just to see whether you like it or not if one is available.

Sounds like a double-action only 1911 in .357 SIG if you REALLY want to get as close to a revolver as possible with an autoloader! Good luck OP. I bet it's just because you don't have enough trigger time behind the "bottom feeders" to be able to shoot them well yet. You might just need a bit more practice!

I'm a revolver guy that owns semi autos and often carries one.

These are my opinions and just my opinions....

I prefer DA with decocker or DAO in auto, fires like my revolvers with a long, smooth DA pull. Just draw, point, and squeeze, no safeties, no short travel light triggers. I would never go with a Glock trigger, nope, not me, never. I gave up my 1911s, too different, single action with a safety. Too much can go wrong when you don't have time to think about it on the draw. I like to keep things similar, draw, long DA pull, fire.

My fave carries are Ruger P90 and P85 and a DAO Kel Tec P11 which is hammer fired. I don't like strikers, prefer hammers.

Good responses so far, I forgot to note that I almost always shoot my revolvers single action, of course I'd shoot my S&W in double action at close range for defense, but 9/10 I'm going to cock the hammer like its second nature.
I think that this rules out DA and DA/SA automatic of me.

Regarding what I like about revolvers, I'd say that the fact I can very reliably connect with my target when I'm shooting one is tops, second to that is the classic and solid feel that my revolvers have.

I was happier than I ever thought I'd be with how the Glock shot, but it had no character, there is something to be said for plain working tool though, I could use it as a beater and leave my revolvers as pretty guns.

The looks of a 1911 excite me more, but I don't know if it's something I can trust at the same price point as a Glock.
The suggestion to rent a 1911 is a good one, I'll keep it in mind next time I'm at the range.

The Filipino 1911s (Citadel, RIA, Armscor) are really very excellent guns. Not the best in terms of pretty bells and whistles, but they run like champions.

Yah, I have heard good things, and checked out a few at shops, but in comparison I'd rather pay $50-100 more for a Springfield Mil-Spec or a Ruger of i go that route.
Nothing against the Filipino guns, they just weren't quite what I'm after.

For around the same price range as the Ruger or Springfield, CZ also makes a single action version of their -75B series... and there's always the Browning Hi-Power for... well, a lot more.

Ruger KP90DC can be fired SA, but is DA first shot unless you cock the hammer. But, I'm a well practiced DA shooter and in defensive practice, never shoot SA. I will shoot SA at game, but I have to think about it. I have SA revolvers, too, so I'm used to cocking on the draw, but I only carry those for hunting or hiking, not for self defense concealed carry. I love my SA revolvers, though. :D

This gun is no longer offered by Ruger...shame, 'cause I think it's the best Ruger auto ever offered.

A gun I've been giving thought to is the EEA Witness in 10mm. Now, I'm not REALLY sure I want a 10, but I do like the gun. It's a CZ75 clone made by Tangfolio in Italy and they have a great rep. There's lots to like about the CZ75 design. This gun would be my choice in 10mm as I have several reasons I don't like Glocks. The gun is offered in 9mm, .45ACP, .40S&W, and .38 super also.

I do like the CZ75 as well, nice looking pistol.
The fact it can be carried DA or cocked and locked is very nice.

It mechanically reminds me of an advanced browning design, which is excellent IMO.

I'd have to get some trigger time on one before I'd commit to buying, but it's a nice additional option to consider.

A good 1911 trigger is easy to get, many 1911's have the crisp glass break feel right out of the box, this alone should endear you to these iconic pistols.

There are lots of ways to modify the grip that would get you comfortable.

CZ82 chambered in 9x18mm Makarov or CZ83 in .380 ACP.

DA trigger pull like a S&W K-frame revolver and SA nice and sweet - the semi-automatic pistol that I have found to be closest to shooting a revolver.

Many people say the Kahr trigger is close to a revolver trigger. Take a look at the K9 or MK9. Both are all metal.

I would like to say about it.You checked out a Glock. I would say 1911 but maybe you should rent one just to see whether you like it or not if one is available.

If you enjoy shooting mainly in single action mode then a 1911 of some kind would be a good choice. Most have decent triggers right out of the box and if not, then it's fairly easy for a qualified gunsmith to clean it up for you. If you prefer a double action semi-auto the Kahr series have a fairly smooth revolver-like trigger on them.

Try to find an HK with the LEM trigger to try. If you like it, you can send yours to HK, and for around $130-150, they can swap the trigger for you.

It's double action, and comes in two different weights, you might prefer the heavier ~6lb one. For demonstration purposes, the P2000 LEM (V2) is typically the heavier one, while the P30 (V1) and HK45 (V7) will have the lighter 4.5lb one.

Sig Sauer P227, or 220 might appeal to you given the operation.

A Beretta 92 series gun may appeal to you if you are willing to step down to a 9mm.

Plastic guns are useful, and as you mentioned, I have an easier time thinking of them as tools only. I'm a revolver guy too who shoots some semiautos. 1911's are fun but can be finicky. I'm looking at an HK VP9 next........ just as soon as I can peel myself away from revolver purchases.
