Do you top off for CCW?

No. Much of the time, I carry a revolver. If the seven shots in my Kahr or the 10 shots in my Hi-Power aren't enough, I probably wouldn't be carrying a sixgun.

Plus, if I want to dechamber anywhere but home, where am I going to put it?

Yes, top off. I, personally, can't see a good reason to tote around a gun that is one round down. It has the capacity, might as well use it.

in my state it is illegal to have one in the chamber if you don't have a ccl and i don't. So as a work around when in my vehicle I keep a revolver with an empty chamber and 5 loaded. It is a DA so still just a pull of the trigger away from going bang even with the empty chamber.

makes me feel better. especially since I was delivering pizzas in some dodgy neighborhoods.

Yes, for two reasons...
1. If I have should have to use it, I want all the firepower I can.
2. If I have should have to use it, I don't want to have to rack the slide, just draw, sweep the safety off and fire.

Yup.

I "Barney up", drop the empty mag and insert a full magazine. There's no need to unload away from home, so the "extra" round isn't a concern. It stays in the chamber, where it belongs.

I always top off all my firearms. I dunno why, just a habit I guess. Interestingly enough though, here's what Gen Rommel had to say about this:

"In a man-to-man fight, the winner is he who has one more round in his magazine."
Erwin Rommel

From what i understand it can hurt you legally if you don't because no one is going to take your word for it if you need to use your gun. Why are they going to take your word that you only had 10 in a 15 round magazine? They will always be looking for the other rounds and if they never find them. They will probably assume you used it somewhere else and did not tell them. Or you know some lawyer will say if you do not have all the rounds in there then it effected the accuraccy of the gun and that is why you were neglegent. It seems like such a easy way to get yourself in trouble and you never would even guess that is what hurts you. It is a weird world we live in

huh?
Put down the Ayoob book and back away slowly.

Allways thinking tactical, and worse case scenario here, but in reality, I "think" the stats show that most shooting incidents are not firefights, and don't last more than a couple rounds....but like most of you, I top off and carry an extra mag.

Carry ammo is like gas in an airplane. The only time you can have too much is when you're on fire.

A dissident view...

...I don't top off...of course my typical "carry profile" involves 42rds of ammo', more mag's in the car, and most often a long gun of some sort in the trunk.

For me it's the administrative safety reasons that SM suggested, and I'm at a Cold Range club quite often...over time it became simpler when I arrive to go Cold with room for 1 in the mag' and to simply seat the mag' and rack the slide to go HOT when I leave.

+1 for watching for setback on your chambered round.

Keep Safe,
