Do you use a lanyard?

I have appreciated them in the past, and I am considering getting lanyard loop mainspring housings on my 1911s, or at least the ones I open carry, for riding horses or ATVs.

I will also echo what Tuner said. In Iraq, were it not for my lanyard, I would have been giving my M-9 an extra special cleaning after a late night trip to the latrine. Just sayin'.

Lanyard has always been a good idea on horseback.

Probably a good idea while doing any whitewater activity too.

A two pound pistol has a lot of momentum and can easily bounce out of a holster in a gallop. Modern retention holsters like the Blackhawk Serpa have made lanyards obsolete except for the purist.

Some seem to be missing the fact that lanyards aren't necessarily for holstered handguns ... always possible to lose a handgun while actually holding it in the hand ... that's primarily when the lanyard comes in handy. No need to tout specific holsters as making lanyards obsolete... I always had the utmost confidence in my holster's retention capability during deployments; the lanyard was a security device in the event I fumbled my pistol when it was already out of the holster.

English Bob would proly say 'May I have some Grey Poupon?"......be sure to grab tailored Savile Row suit and custom-made shoes while you're at it.

Can't imagine keeping a 7.5 inch Vaquero or Colt New Service in a Blackhawk Serpa.

My 1863 pattern holster would be a tough to 'bounce out' of but if it did my Vaquero is replaceable. My 1917 Colt, not so much.

Also (now I realize this is not for everyone) while canoeing/boating/fishing and you happen to be carrying, losing your cooler when you flip your boat is one thing. Losing a $500 firearm is another.

Just regular walking around/hunting/woods carry... I don't worry about it.
