Doctors asking if there are guns in your home?

When you reach 65 and are on Medicare you will receive one annual doctor visit covered by Medicare. Part of this exam is a 3 page Medicare Health Risk Assessment questioner with many stupid questions. One of which (#36) is about guns in the house. There are 63 questions plus alcohol, depression, obesity and of course STDs. Examples are : Do you have rugs in the hallways, grab bars in the bathroom, handrails on stairways, proper lighting and others. Have you had more than 2 sexual partners? Use protection? Is the exchange of money involved? How old are your partners? Same sex? I could go one but you get the idea. The first time I was handed these 3 pages I asked for a blank copy and scanned 3 pages and had a discussion with my doctor about the intrusive nature of this. She has CCW and we discus firearms frequently. When the Medicare exam comes up now they do not even mention the form again. I think we have reached an understanding. Your tax dollars at work!

Ya, no kidding, it's no longer an actual physical exam, it's a "wellness survey". I had one of these right after Obamacare started - when I was expecting an annual physical - and it was not done by a doctor, it was done by a PA, and she never even laid hands on me to even take my pulse - I guess she could tell I was alive because I answered her questions. But ... NEVER AGAIN!!! Every year it comes up and every year I decline to do it.

Screw it. I think I can tell myself whether or not I'm still alive. :cuss:

All of my Doctors are avid shooters or hunters.
My PCP is a retired Army doc that did time in the 5 th Special Forces group.
He said if ever asked to say no, and call him, "I will straighten them out"

I answered N/A on my questionnaire about guns, I guess I'll have to do the same on the Medicare form when I turn 65 in a few years.

Bob Willman: I've never seen that long questionnaire. Turned 65 in late July.
Was that long Spanish Inquisition linked to which state you live in?

Because I very stupidly ignored becoming short of breath in 2017, but no other symptom ("widowmaker artery" slowly closed), my regular doctor is a cardiologist.

Never had a problem with the doctors at all. Discussed my blood lead level, hearing protection and shooting glasses. One big fat non-issue so far with me.

I was able to get a meeting with Representative Jinkins in Tacoma several years ago to pitch the SBR bill to her. She is rather anti-gun, but gave me and another guy (one of her constituents) 20 minutes. After introductions she asked a hypothetical question. "What if I asked a neighbor family about how they secured their gun collection prior to my children going over to the house to play and they objected to me asking?" I told her to "find better friends" as I would not allow my kids to be a a house with improperly secured guns. After my answer it occurred to me that it was a test and that I passed. :) She kept us talking for 30 minutes. But in the end she killed the SBR bill twice; the House and Senate versions. The Speaker of the House brought it to the floor for a vote himself. Such is politics.

I belong to a historically liberal medical system paid for through my spouses employer.

They used to give us those questions on a form when we took the kids for doctor visits.

I wrote on every one of them “None of your f@#£+¥g business” for that question, and I asked of the providers why such an asinine question could possibly be connected to my child’s visit that day.

Surprisingly enough, these questionnaires We’re stopped after only a couple of years and are no longer a part of the visits.

Stay safe.

In Florida it became common practice to ask about guns as a background information questionnaire. In 2011 a law was passed by the legislature banning the questions. The Drs. fought it (for our health of course) and the law was struck down in appeals court.
Interestingly enough I don't recall being asked in more recent Dr. visits.
I too have recently started the VA process and I can't remember being asked in the recent appts.

I have been on Medicare for 18 years. Yes, I’m an old fart but a pretty healthy one according to my doctor. My wife and I used to get an annual physical at no cost done by a doctor. This changed to a “wellness check” a few years ago and it is done by a nurse and then the doctor comes in and “talks” with you a few minutes. Medicare pays 100% of this. If you have issues that needs addressed you make a doctor’s appointment and you get to pay 20% just as you do with other doctor’s visits. My wife and I did this again about a month ago.

We both filled out a questionnaire when the wellness thing started and have never seen another. There was nothing about firearms or sexual partners on it and we have never been asked either question.

My dentist is a long range rifle competitive shooter and occasionally spends some of his income on elk hunts etc. I have never been asked if I have guns, could be the big knife I wear on my belt provides the obvious answer.

This may be a little hard to understand, but I've been asked by the ER staff at the local hospital, and a specialist that I go to, and... by the brave men in blue (asking my if I have firearms in my truck).

The answer to the cops generally the same. "I don't generally lend my guns out, do you need one right now?" To the docs.... I just say no. For the doc, I figure if it ever became "an issue" because I said no, I'll claim that I had no control over what the doctor put on his pad. Its not like I signed off on the answer. I've NEVER seen a firearms question on any medical form that you fill out, its more like a question during initial conversation. At the ER, I truthfully answered about hearing loss, tinnitus. They wanted to know how that happened. I just said Harleys and Rock'n'Roll.
