Someday I'd like to get a shotgun for home defense; unfortunately, what I'd like doesn't seem to exist--or at least, my searches haven't turned one up. Ideally, the shotgun should have an 18" barrel and a full-length mag tube and feed via a pump action, which would seem to indicate either a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500. But I'd like a blued finish and wood furniture, which seems to rule out everything with that barrel length and mag capacity.

Does anyone more knowledgeable about shotguns happen to know of something that fits these criteria? I prefer the Remington 870 action, so if I've just missed something on Remington's website I'll be ecstatic.

You should be able to find a used 870 Police with walnut stocks and blued metal. If it doesn't already have a mag extension you can get one from Choate.

This is the exact setup my father has, btw.

All you have to do is buy a blue and wood gun, then take it to any gunsmith. They can cut the barrell down and re-crown it to your desired length. My uncle did this with a 20 gauge 870 a couple of years ago for my aunt. She's about 5 feet tall and 90 pounds, so she didn't want the weight of a long barrel. It shot wonderful and she loved it!

I don't see any 870Ps listed in current production that are blued with walnut furniture, but they are still mentioned on the page at http://www.remingtonle.com/shotguns/870standard.htm . I know there are thousands of former LEO riot guns in that configuration still out there, and they do turn up from time to time on the used market.

And there are MILLIONS of new and used Wingmasters out there that fit your description- just add a smoothbore 18- 20" barrel and a magazine extension and there you have it.

Keep your eyes open... one will turn up with your name on it.

Last year I bought a Mossberg 500 Field/Security Combo for $239. That Combo came with a 28" barrel, wooden stock, 18.5" barrel, 3 choke tubes, choke wrench and a plastic Pistol grip kit. The Mossberg number is 54169.
