Hey. I was bored and thinking to myself does anyone CC a single action revolver? and i honestly cant think of any reason not to, other than size being a limiting factor. They come in good stopping calibers and they are inherently safe. and if you practice with them you can be almost as fast as a DA or auto gun. Your thoughts?

If it was all I owned I would, but it would be hard for me to justify choosing a SA revolver over any of my other handguns for CCW. It has no practical advantages that I can see; it isn't more concealable, more accurate, deliver more firepower, nor is is faster to reload than my DA revolvers and auto-loaders. I did once shoot a feral dog with a BP revolver. I was riding my bike down a country road and was attacked by a pack of about 20 feral-behaving dogs. But I was under 21 then, and the BP revolver was the only handgun I could legally purchase. It was effective that day, but if I'd had my druthers then, I'd have carried something more modern.

Amongst the majority of freedom-lovers, going armed is more a matter of principle than statistical necessity. But in order to pass new legislation that lessen the restrictions on the carrying of arms, we have to convince the fence-sitters that there is a NEED for the average law-abiding citizen to carry arms. We have to focus on the very real NEED for people to possess the means for self-defense. The carrying of a single action revolver suggests to many that the one who carries it is more nostalgic than practical and that his is a hobby or game rather than a serious discipline.

I, too have a weak spot for classic revolvers and autos. I'm just thankful that the 1911 still enjoys a reputation as a serious fighting handgun.

I have , in the past, carried a SA revolver as my primary piece. I did it when it was all I could get. Given my druthers, I will carry my 4" 45 ACP N frame but if all I have is a SA than I have no problems carrying that. Granted, it's not for everyone but it is far better than going unarmed.

There was a lengthy thread about this topic a few weeks ago. I made it #30.

SAA as a viable SD gun.

30. Regardless of how much you love your SAA (or Ruger Blackhawk) the SA revolver is not a good choice for concealed carry. It is slower for follow up shots and agonizingly slow to reload. Carry one if it makes you happy, but don’t try to argue that it’s a good choice. It is not.

Does a NAA Mini-Revolver count?

That's the only one of mine I CC. My Blackhawks and my ROA are WAY big. I could carry my .31 pocket remmy I guess, but let's stay serious. LOL

Reloading is WAY slow, so if you CC a single action, the one downfall is you'd better get it done in six. Another downfall is, well, the size of the things, generally, and the weight. A Ruger SSM .32 H&R mag loaded hot might work IWB if you could makes some leather for it. That's another thing, gonna take custom leather. I've got a buddy with a Ruger SSM in .32 H&R that gets around 450 ft lbs out of it. That's about what the new SP101 in .327 Fed Mag does. It's a very strong gun and can be loaded hot.

NAA Mini here, too.

WRT CC, Elmer Keith was a little guy, and he CC'ed single actions the old fashioned way: with the loading gate open to hook on his waistband.

A funny story or two about that... The best is when he carried across the Canadian border and evaded the Mounties' search.

i was under the impression that it is safe to only load 5 rounds in a six shooter

Nope. Only the original style Colt and guns that copy its internals like the old Blackhawks. Modern Rugers and other non-replica single actions are generally safe to carry -- but check your specific gun before you do it.

A guy recently won a shootout with a holdup man while armed with a copy of a Remington single action. It was VERY close. The trigger broke part way into the fight and he ended up basically fanning the gun.

I'm not THAT comfortable with my S&W Model 36 and only one speed loader. I have the greatest disinterest in being in a gunfight with only five shots and NO speed loaders.

I carried this 22mag for a year or two during the 1990's. That was back during the days when we bought into that crap about the 22mag being like a 38 special.

Based on energy numbers?

Seems that that's still going on, just with some different calibers I could mention...

Soundtrackzz --------- you are right about them being able to shoot almost as fast as a DA revolver or semi-auto ----- I've been competing in SASS/Cowboy Action for about 6 years and have seen some amazeing shooting with a SA revolver --- BUT --- they are SLOW to reload by even the best Cowboy shooters ---- that reason ALONE makes them not a very good choice for defending yourself and loved ones.

I have carried a Ruger Vaquero in 44 Magnum in a cross draw many times in cold weather when I was wearing a coat. Especially is I was messing around outside a lot. I like horsepower.

well, its a personal issue. nobody can deny a full load from a 45 colt chambered peacemaker wont knock a linebacker on his ass. its just that the modern mindset of magazines, and "tacticool reloading" procedures have made it a point of overlooking simple hardware in an effort to circumvent a problem of ammunition capacity the old timers figure out.

carry multiple loaded guns, and actually AIM at the target.
but its still a personal frame of mind to choose a platform. at least with a sa revolver you dont have to worry about barrel swapping.

If you're most comfortable with a single action, carry that. I'd also suggest carrying a backup gun for an instant reload.

Stats based on absolutely nothing (hell, Obama does it, why can't I?)
99% chance you'll never need to draw your CCW.
90% chance that if you do need it, a SA revolver in a real caliber can answer the mail.

That said, I carry a G27 strong side and a 5-shot snub in the pocket.

I do carry an SA when I'm in the woods, in the field, or on horse. Something odd about carrying the Glock on horseback. Feel like John Wayne is going to rise from the dead and kick my ass up over my shoulders.

i carried a colt 7'5" 2nd gen for 4 years when i lived up north , in a bianchi x-15 under my coat .

i had no problems whatsoever.

it was no more burden than my p-35 9mm (which i didn't trust due to it being of a barely adequate caliber for flies and cockroaches)...

I carrried my Ruger 3 1/4 vaquero in 45lc once in a while untill I messed up and sold it,,,,,,,I needed money for bills:(

There are a few people who carry single action revolvers. I for one do. I don't feel under gunned.

Pretty easy to carry in pancake holster or Mernickle PS6SA. Believe it or not they are easy to conceal with untucked button shirt.

Weigth is not an issure about the same a full size 1911.

I practice with single action revolvers almost exclusively. They are pretty quick for six. as others have said reloads are slower.

Yeah, guys like Jeff Quinn, Massad Ayoob, Elmer Keith & Bill Jordan are complete idiots. Thank God for the balanced facts guys like you bring to the forum.

Grin - maybe compromise. A Blackhawk on your hip and a 642 in your pocket? If that combo won't at least get you to cover where you could reload the BH, maybe you should have spent that day at home hiding under the bed anyway.

As an aside, HOW are you going to carry spare loads (and how many ) for the BH? I mean, the .45LC is a beefy cartridge, would take a pretty large cartridge pouch to carry at least another 6 rds?
