Does anyone else do this?

If it is a good deal, i'll buy it. Either for trade fodder, for resale, or because I know I want a gun in that caliber. I just bought 200rds M193 for .30 a round, hoping to get a gun to put it through.

No, I have NEVER purchased any ammunition for a gun I do not own, or even for one I think I might some day own, for that matter.

I have enough ammo as it is, for the guns I DO OWN.

I've got a couple boxes of 7.62x39 that for the life of me I can't figure out why. Guess I'll have to get something to shoot it through:) I could give it to my buddy for his AK, but it is MY ammo:)

I'm guilty. I'm sitting on a stash of MM Mouser ammo in bandoleers on stripper clips that I bought years ago when it was real cheap. I still have not picked up a Mouser to shoot it out of.

I stock up a "little" on all of the most common calibers. I have far more in the calibers for which I intend to keep firearms. I'm not stocking up just in case that I'll buy firearms for those calibers but for a different reason. My little stockpile is an investment in the future. No, I don't only invest in ammo.:D

I may have done it with some of the surpluss ammo. I think I bought 7.62x25 without having a gun that shot it.

I know that I have bought reloading dies for calibers that I don't plan on reloading for anytime soon. I just fingure its cheap insurance to buy the dies now while you can and at a deal if you find it. 7.62x54R, 7.62x39, 9mm Makarov, 7.62x25 and so on. I even have a set of 5.45x39 dies and I don't think anyone makes brass for it yet. The dies cost all most as much as a tin of the ammo right now. But one day the ammo will not be that cheap or may be long gone. But I will still be able to sitdown and make up a few rounds if I can scrounge up the brass. One of the more common varmit calbers (.222Rem I think) can be used to form the 5.45x39 brass. .223 bullets can be sized down to fit.

I also pickup all the poor un-loved brass at the range when I go. I sort it and bag it up till I have enough of one caliber to use as trade boot. Funky, cracked and berdan brass goes in the recycle bin to get a new lease on life some where else.

I have been known to buy brass for calibers that I don't own if I think a buddy can use it or I think I may want somthing in that caliber. 10mm comes to mind. I want to pick one up but have not done it yet. I did get some brass for it a while back though. Now if I can find a deal on 200grn 40cal bullets I will have no reson not to get a 10mm.

Once a Scroung allways a Scroung.:D

I used to buy ammo in hopes of buying a firearm to go with.
I have had to stop doing that and I now want to get to just what I have in the locker. Now my goal is to get to one caliber per centerfire firearm. One rifle, one handgun, and one shotgun, so I can keep logistics easier for handloading.
And a rimfire similar to the centerfire for more economical practice

I will start to collect brass for something I do not own. When I get a 50 cal ammo can full I get the dies. Then I get a few boxes of factory to use as control group rounds. Now I have no excuse for not buying that firearm----so off to the gun-show I go.:D

I was in Walmart one time... I don't usually buy gun things there BUT there was a big pile of stuff in the clearance section for $1.00-$2.00 a box. It was mostly handgun calibers that I don't own, but I bought it all anyway. I've traded some away for things I wanted, but most of it is still around...

I was tempted, but did not buy some .22 Hornet brass in anticipation of reloading for a .22 Hornet I was hoping to buy. That was 3 years ago and I haven't bought the rifle yet, so am glad I restrained myself. I do understand the temptation though. I have bought large quantities of ammo when I find a good deal in anticipation of future hunts, so buying ammo in anticipation of a future gun purchase is not that much different. After all, I buy lots of books in anticipation of having time to read, but don't have as much time to read as I would like. We all dream, hope, and plan for that special gun, special hunt, special shot....sigh, it sure is fun!!!

Before I had a .45, I saw a mega sale on blazer brass 230 grain. I bought a ton of it because it was cheap, and a .45 was on the horizon.

I have since shot all of that ammo.

There is a good Foxworthy line in this thread.

If you have ever bought ammo just because someday you might have a gun for it, you might be a.....

In that instance, I probably would have as well. Getting it that cheap, you could swap it for something you do need, or sell it at a profit.

I would've done the same. $1-2 per box??? Stoopid manager = good deals for customers. :D

Yes, every time, but only because the decision has already been made to buy a different type of gun.

As happened after making the decision in early '09 to buy my first Enfield, the last of the cheap ammo was gone within about two months (SAMCO was the last distributor). As a precaution I ordered a case from them, and then more from a friend's buddy.

Even if your next caliber is Not becoming extinct in terms of cheap surplus, the price could easily jump due to an unpredictable mix of factors or speculation. It could be global economics or a single new Supreme Court justice.
By the way, isn't all of the low-cost 5.45x39 (AK-74) ammo produced in Russia? Most liberals don't like military guns with larger mags, or their ammo. Isn't that having most of the AK-74's "ammo eggs" in one basket?

With Lebanon, Syria and maybe Iraq sliding into civil war, with factions in all of these countries incited and supported by the Iran/Hezbollah axis, imagine future transportation costs if fuel is driven by speculators to $4.50-$5.00/gallon this summer (even without Israeli Air Force deep interdiction missions).
A few years ago, about a dozen guys on Wall Street and the Chicago Board of Trade had a majority influence on our fuel prices, and issues were not nearly as sensitive as they are now.
If I could justify the cash to 'somebody', I would buy $3,000 of ammo right now, partly for my next caliber.

I expected a few others did this when I started this thread. Now I know I am not alone, so thats good. In my defense, I have always ended up buying the guns that I have bought ammo for. The 2 current ammos I have that I do not have guns for are 9mm, for a Hi point carbine I intend on getting, and 22wmr, for a kel-tec pmr 30. I have bought 308 winchester for an AR10, and ended up getting a DPMS LR-308, I bought 45 acp, and ended up getting a Springfield XD45, and the last one was .223, in which I bought a Stevens model 200 for. So I am pretty sure the other guns will be in my collection soon.

No i do not go out to buy it. But i do have a lot of ammo in calibers i no longer own. Sold the guns but kept the ammo. Because i have learned over the years, i WILL end up getting another gun in said caliber. I always do. Because i hear them crying out at night. I am lonely get me a gun.:D

I don't usually buy loaded ammo for calibers I don't own, but i do buy components. I have brass, bullets and dies for 45 Colt, 41 Rem Mag, 38 and 44 Winchester.

I did it for .38 Super, during the ammo shortage I found some great deals on .38 Super, eventually I got an upper for my EAA Witness to use it up, eventually got a Taurus PT-1911 in .38 Super to go along with it. Now I reload for it since the above foresight got me a good supply of empty brass.

I've been tempted by cheap surplus but never bit on any. That cheap 5.45x39 and 7.62x25 is tempting! Better spent on calibers I already own though...
