I am planning a deer, antlope hunt out west next year and I was wondering how well the 25-06 does on deer. I know it's a great antlope cartridge.

i do

browning a-bolt 25-06 with 1-9'' twist if im not mistaken mine loves the 117 grainers and is an absolute sledgehammer on deer at any reasonable range. you'll love the cartridge, less recoil than a 30'06 and just as devistating, good cartridge for about anything in north america.

I don't use a 25.06 but my brother in law has taken several deer with one in a model 700. I know with the right shot placement it will drop them like a ton of bricks. Shoots good, not alot of recoil and does the job.

What 41magsnub said.

I've taken a few deer with a .243, and so has a local guy who's sort of a local deer hunting legend.

If a .243 will kill them, a .25-06 will kill them even deader.

Whole family uses the .25-06 2ith great results. I use 115-120 grain bullets (Nosler Partition or Hornady). Dad uses 100 grain Nosler Partition, brother shoots 100 grain Hornady in an improved .25-06. Between us, we have probably killed 35 or so Antelope, and at least as many deer. You shouldn't have any problems with the .25. Have a friend in Wyoming who's wife uses the round on everything up thru Elk. She got a Moose tag last year, and did move up to a .270 for it, but said that she would have felt confident in the .25 if recoil ha been too much in the .270.

Good luck!

25-06 is fine. A lot of those are turning up in the deer-hunting community around here. The same with .243 Winchester.

I have. Kills stuff just as dead as any other cartridge I've used.

I have a custom Interarms Mark X sporter in .25-06 that my uncle built 25 years ago. I'm going to shoot it for the first time tommorrow after restoring it. He shot several antelope, deer up to 450 yards and several elk with it. Also took a few coyotes at 500+. It's a flat shooter that still has plenty of power at longer ranges. It'll also double as a long range varminter with the right loads. I've read that it can operate at similiar ranges as the .22-250 in this application. My first hunt will be in June on a varminting trip. I'll be loading 75 and 87 grain bullets for the trip. Then I'll load 100 grain and above for deer in the fall.

Deer aren't any harder to kill than an antelope. Although I used to know some guys who would wave a red rag, and when the antelope walked up to the window, shoot it with a 22. But I love my 2506, shot my last mule deer at 431 yards.

I haven't made anybody mad in a while so i'll do it now.

The .270 will match the 25-06 120gr velocity with the 130gr 270 bullet.

The Speer #11 shows a max of 3071 fps with a 130 gr bullet.
The same #11 shows a max of 3022 with a 120gr bullet in the 25-06.

The 270 used a 22" barrel and the 25-06 used a 24" barrel.

There are more good factory loads available for the 270 than the 25-06 if you don't reload.

The upside is that the 25-06 has a better selection of light bullets for varmint hunting.

I have a 30-06, two 7-08s, a 243 and a 7x57. I would love to have a 25-06. Its an excelent caliber especially for the reloader.
