My brother just ordered a "Mako Tactical SSR-25 Sniper Stock" for his AR in 6.5 grendel, does anyone have any experience with one of these?

It seems like a good idea in theory... He saw it one this blog.

Sorry about the picture, I have no idea how to resize it.

I never could find that gun on gunblast either...

No experience, and don't plan to get any.

Most things I shoot at with an AR-15 would scamper plumb into the next county while I was screwing with the tri-pod legs.

If I want fast & fairly steady, I will use a hasty shooting sling.
If I want fast and steadier, I will lay down on the ground and shoot prone.
If I want slow and really solid, I will use a bench and sandbags.

What do you do if you need fast and almost very solid?

I think there is some merit to it, but for most AR's most shooters won't really need it, or notice much, if any difference with it.

In a good 6.5 AR I can see getting more use (than a 5.56) out of it, and any of the precision "long action" AR's.

However, I personally think it's a little silly, personally. Military snipers have been pulling off 1000 meter shots without bipods/monopods, and they probably know a little about shooting and having to carry your rifle with you. Weight matters in a fighting rifle, or a hunting rifle.

What are his plans for the rifle? If he is going to just punching paper from the prone?

If he intends to carry it around looking for a 'yote or something, it's probably just excess weight. Though that design looks about as compact as possible, it also looks more prone to snagging than the folding designs.

From what I have seen, you don't really have to screw with it, you just push a button and it goes to the desired length...

We have a 1,000+ yard range in our backyard with targets every 100 yards or so. The gun is used for steel target shooting and varmints.

My brother lost most of the usage of his legs in Afghanistan so he won't be walking around with it. He has difficulty laying prone for very long and tends to lay on his side due to balance issues. He regularly shoots MOA at 600 yards with the grendel.

I was just curious if anyone else has used one of these and what they thought of it regarding durability, comfort, etc...

monopod stocks are useful for when you get into position and plan to be there for a while
(happens to me regularly enough that i keep a monopod on my SR25, but none of my other rifles)
it's basically just a portable rear bag. no big deal. weight can be a factor

I have one of these stocks on my Galil in a side folding config.

The stock is great for packing that thing around the woods and up in the high timber in SD where my family is from. It's about the same weight as the all metal folder with the added advantage of the "3rd leg" built into the stock. That comes in handy when you're in a hide waiting for a sneaky a$$ed mule deer to put in an appearance.

Haven't tried it on an AR yet. Think I'll give it a go :).
