Some gun companies use sex in their advertising and I was wondering how this really affects their sales/image. Kahr Arms for instance uses the pitch "Thin is Sexy" with scantily clad women in provocative poses. How does this affect your chances of buying that company's product? Please vote in the poll...

I look at it about the same way I do beer commercials...if you need sex to sell it its a crappy product *cough* bud *cough*.

However, I don't think I've seen gun commercials or ads using sex...

*edit* except in those ammo mags and calenders.

Those young ladies on the cover of the Dillon catolog sure look good, but no sex does not sell any firearms or related products to me. Especially the ladies in the Kahr ads.

If i am correct,EAA gun commercial uses a woman in a short tight dress and tight shirt sitting on the edge of a desk to sell/advertise their guns on TV.

I'd like to think I'm too sophisiticated to be duped. I do like to look at the ads but I see through the advertising. I have never bought anything due to this type of advertising.

Does it get my attention? Um... I'm a twenty year old guy, so yea, absolutely. But I like to base my purchase on things like reliability and magazine capacity, and if I can even buy that gun. If Karh really wanted to sell to me, all they'd have to do is change it from "thin is sexy" to "Thin makes it legal for you to carry concealed if you're over 18 but under 21"

I like to look at the pretty ladies, but I have to say that I find sexy gun ads to be kind of creepy. Don't feed the antis, people.

On the other hand, in ads for beer, cars, motorcycles, music, etc., bring 'em on!

I like admiring beauty & it might get me to look at something I wouldn't otherwise but it wouldn't sway my final decision. I'm always trying to figure out how to get the most for my money.

It isn't usually the sex that actually sells, its main purpose is to draw you in. It is an effective attention getter and if the company is lucky consumers may actually look at the product after they are done ogling.

I'm having a hard time coming up with the right words to describe someone who would buy a product based solely on alluring advertisements, but I'm sure it is a small minority... I hope so at least.

I have severe brand loyalties based on many criteria, how hot the poster girls are not being one of them. Not that I mind looking at the pretty ladies, but it does not compell me to buy a product I wouldn't on other points.

Good question OP. It actually turns me off to the company, and as stated above, if they have to use sex to sell their wares it's probably not that great a product. Presently, the only gun companies I can think of that of that use sex appeal are Kahr Arms and EAA, and I really wasn't impressed with their product lines to begin with.

Not much, but it may influence me to buy a poster or two.

Right on. It might influence the way I purchase other products (clothing, for example), but not guns. The Glock posters come to mind as a product I might want hanging on my garage wall, but wouldn't make me like the gun any more or less. I think it can be taken too far - while I find the Glock posters tastefully done, the Kahr ads I've seen are kinda hokey.

I've never been to Europe, but I understand many countries there have "inverted" standards in re: sex and violence.

Nudity is commonplace, to the point where it doesn't attract attention in advertisements. Violence in media is discouraged with some enthusiasm, on the other hand.

No, sex in advertising doesn't influence my decision-making, either in a positive or negative direction.

On the other hand, I give a "tip of the hat" to manufacturers who use a little of it, in a tasteful manner.

Definition of a puritan - a person who knows that somewhere, despite his best efforts, someone is having some fun...

In my opinion, Sex is for within marriage and procreation.. So, my answer is a definate NO, its a major turnoff.

Oh gosh.. I am gonna catch heat now from some..

Do you mean sexy gun ads??? Personally, half-naked women and guns I never found to be a very appetizing combination. Yes, I am not a sexist, asexual or anything like that, its just that I think seeing some macho dude (or chick) in military, outdoor or ninja gear looks more cool then some girl in a bikini holding a decked out AR-15 with all the nice gizmos. Hope she can fit some extra mags in her bikini strap. Please be careful not to break a nail pulling the trigger..

No influence . . . a pair of hooters has never found its way onto my list of requirements for a firearm. Actually, I almost never look at any advertisements when I pick out a gun; instead I would do exhaustive research into its reliability, accuracy, and other features.

I suspect the effects depend on the person's age and personality type, as the biggest factors. We most likely wont even realize we are getting influenced if we are, but in my case as for what I suspect majority, I "think" it has no effect at all on me. But how do I know that with any real certainty? Its impossible to be 100% sure though.

I'd also suggest that the women in the average gun ad are hardly "selling sex."

That would include a lot more scantiliness and the like. FFS, just cause there's a woman in the ad doesn't mean it's selling sex.
