Pasadena, TX Gun Show: “Another Monday. Another Gun Show Rant”

Or I could title this thread: “Babes, Bullets, and Boneheads.” …but I thought that would be too salacious.

Okaysoooo…

I went to said gun show this past weekend. I witnessed 2 things which really make me wish people had some sense. I don’t ask for much. Just the teeniniest bit of common sense would suffice.

<rant>

Bonehead #1: I’m at the “CLIPS” dealer. Anyone in this area knows the table I mean. The big table, with display cases, that has “CLIPS” for every thing. I’m contemplating some Mags and I hear someone to the left of me say something about a PF-9 Mag. Well… I’m kinda fascinated by the PF-9 at present and my head turned in that direction. Just in time to see BONEHEAD take out his PF-9, grab the new mag from the vendor, drop the mag currently in his gun, and expose the fact, to me at least, that it was loaded.

My brain quickly decided that, at that time, alerting the area to a twitchy freak who was exhibiting some really bad gun handling skills might not be healthy for whoever was being covered by his muzzle if he had one in the pipe and, therefore, was not a great option. I grabbed the wife and left the area fast. I found the guy at the back entrance (behind the cinder block wall) who works at the show. We got a police officer there and reported what I could remember.

I hope the guy got thrown out. Given the look on the face of one of Pasadena’s Finest, I think a quick trip to the city lock up was going to be preferable to the dressing down that he was about to get.

Normally, I don’t get freaked by loaded guns. But loaded guns (let me turn up the volume here)… LOADED GUNS NEED TO BE LEFT UN-DRAWN UNLESS YOU CAN QUICKLY AND SAFELY RETURN THEM TO A SAFE CONDITION OR UNLESS YOU NEED TO DEFEND YOUR LIFE. Yanking your loaded smoke wagon out of your pocket in the middle of a room of people to try a test a new mag does not seem to pass that test.

Bonehead #2: As we were leaving, I looked up and saw an extremely emaciated young woman in what can only be described as a belt that had some ruffles on it that sort of covered her important areas and a top that had puffy short sleeves and came down to points just below her breasts and just above her Zyphoid. She was such a waify thing that had the top been any bigger I MIGHT have been able to make out the logo on the back of it for the business she was being degraded by... I mean shilling for. My wife said she could make out something about “training” and “360” only because she had seen a fully clothed male a while ago wearing a much larger logo since he had a full shirt on. Funny that.

Why, oh why, did BONEHEAD #2 see fit to put the lady in this outfit?

First off, there are some women and children there. That was really not called for. I can think of several uniform options that would have drawn my eye to more than just the fleshy parts and MAYBE I’d have seen the actually logo. Maybe, and here’s a crazy thought… Maybe someone say of the female persuasion (such as my wife) would have been looking for the product or services of this business. Do you think they get a lot of females thinking, “WOW! TRAINING! THEY MUST BE REALLY QUALIFIED! SHE HAS AN INNIE AND IS A SIZE ‘0’! WHERE DO I SIGN UP?”

Or, let’s just not stretch our minds that far and say that maybe my companion was female (such as my wife happens to be) and I was interested in taking advantage of said business (which I have no real desire to… but let’s just ‘fer instance’). What do you think the chances are that I will be drifting anywhere near said operation? I like sleeping in my own bed after all.

Second off, it just looked sad. It looked like someone had taken an attractive, but very hungry, girl and told her, “You prance around in this and let the guys ogle you; and we’ll get you a ham and cheese sandwich after. Ok?” I’m not really saying I would have been OK with the typical “Autorama silicone impregnated show girl”, but my goodness! This seemed to hit a new low. “I’ll take ‘Scantily Clad Emaciated Barely Post Pubescent Girls’ for 200 Alex.” Maybe on the SPIKE TV edition of Jeopardy.

Thirdly; it’s just sad that for some in this area of interest “women and guns” is little more than a fetish. I’m not sure WHY a tiny girl in a in a stripper costume would make me what to do ANYTHING gun related (except take a serious look at volunteering her boss for immediate export to a N.O.W. rally and give participants a case of rubber bullets and pictures of how he dresses his slaves... I mean workers), but I do know it made me pretty upset. It’s hard to defend firearms as a sport or hobby, let alone a Constitutional Right, with juvenile stuff like this at events.

Done now. </rant>

Now there are some really fine people at that show. Several of them have several pieces of rectangular denim paper that formerly resided in my pockets so I can’t, and won’t, condemn the whole show. But we do get some right stupid tonkers* in our area of interest and I just felt the need to point them out and get some frustration off my chest.

i only go to the pasadena show to taunt the thieving lying dealers & occasionally buy something from one of the individuals wanking around. i bought two mags from the "clips" dealer a couple of years ago & they were overpriced junk. most of the dealers there don't like me to much because when i bring in a rifle i'm not broke so i don't have to sell it for their ridiculous offers & when they say we can do some trading i usually ask them if they have a truck outside because their whole table wouldn't be enough to cover my rifle

I love the "Free City of Aztlan " location though. That's priceless. But sad. Someday the rest of the country will wake up and understand.

I thought the 360 table babe looked pretty hot. She wasn't hurting anyone and while you may not like her attire, it was street legal in all manner. Impractical for sure, but then what is practical about a Barret 50? Rather presumptuous of you to assume the outfit wasn't of her choosing.

I thought it too crowded and when I had to wait in line for 20+ minutes to pick up my Kel-Tec SU-16C I was thinking recession, what recession?

Found a Galil Orlite mag for $20 at a small table, I should have got more when CDNN had them for $10. Seemed .50 BMG ammo was flying off the tables at $50/10.

I'm 100% behind you about the bonehead and the loaded pistol! The venue is PC30.06 posted, his CHL should be pulled! Fortunately I missed all that.

I went to that show and was not impressed, I needed an XD 45 and no dealer had any tacts so I was pretty annoyed. Its a small show and although I got my xd service for a good price, I don't think I would go back and wait for the reliant show. I did notice that bachman ( I was there sunday) was running out of some Glock models and they didnt have any xd tacts, so they must have had a busy saturday.

Does anyone else think that the "clip dealer" is a rip off?

The brainless guy who pulled out the loaded PF9 could probably be charged with brandishing a handgun according to Texas law.

I would have been upset about the man pulling his CCW. As far as the woman, I am afraid they make more money by pleasing the many and offending the few. I stopped going up there a while back, sounds like I'm not missing much.

I no longer have any reason to visit a gun show any more. In fact I just missed one last weekend. I am tired of hearing the dooms day folks the nazies the clan the lies and the idiots. Nope no more for me thanks to the internet I no longer need a gunshow.

Well, I had to work so I didn't get to go. But is the Reliant show any better? I haven't been to one of those in quite a spell.

I've found the Reliant shows to be boring, and a cause for tension since I'm somewhat phobic about crowds.

They're boring for me because I'm not interested in hunting firearms, and you can find Glocks and XDs anywhere. And when you factor in the parking fee, the entrance fee, (and the 3% service charge for credit cards if you don't bring cash), I don't think you're likely to save much, if any, money.

I'll probably still pass through the one next month, but only because I work at Reliant and it's convenient for me to do so.

FWIW, I don't think the Pasadena and Reliant shows are run by the same group (Houston Gun Collectors Assoc., in the Reliant case).

lol, i know of the booth that sells "clips"

i always see gangsters in there buying aftermarket hi cap 30rnd magazines for their guns. even seen one customer come back and demanded money back because it jammed on him.

1. I don't like uber-skinny women. The Good Lord made women curvy for a reason.
2. I'm an insensitive, hairy chested, flatulent male, but I still find the whole guns & girls thing offensive. As gun owners we're not doing ourselves any favors by promoting that type of image.
3. The last time I bought something at a gun show was 15 years ago (beautiful Fox side by side 12 gauge. Still kicking myself for selling it). That was the last time I saw anything reasonably priced. Oh, how I wished I would have also bought the dirt cheap Mauser Broomhandle one guy was selling. Still kicking myself for not buying that.

Right now, the only reason I have for going to gun shows is that it’s still the best place to paw lots of guns and see if they fit. Currently, we are trying to find a better CCW for the Mrs. Once we’ve done that, I’ll probably stick to the internet and the losing fight against Milsurpitus.

…homemade fudge?

Here it’s jerky. Don’s Smokehouse and Rust Game Place took some of my money.

I like the Reliant show, but I like looking at old junk and the wife gets to visit the junk yard in the back. There are more dealers there so that will be the place to do some final pawing before the Mrs. makes her final (for now) decision.

She wasn't hurting anyone

Wally,

Here’s where I have to respectfully disagree. I think she was hurting the sport. This type of disregard for females by male “gun nuts” is just more ammo for those who think we are Neanderthals who just need a gun to get it… well, you get the idea. Women are not accessories. They don’t have rail attachments so they can be hung off an AR like a cheap brass catcher.

As an aside to the firearms aspect, I also think she was hurting herself. I know this is not a popular opinion, but she really doesn’t have to let herself be exploited like that. I know that type of logic falls on deaf ears now a days, but I do think it’s sad that an attractive young girl feels that it’s OK to be treated like a piece of meat. I know it happens all the time, but quantity doesn’t make it right.

I know, I know… she needs to eat just like everyone else. But it’s just sad that it’s OK to exploit a woman like that. Her choice or not, it’s still exploitation. And this is not really the place for that line of the discussion. I’m sure APS would be happy to bat that one around should someone what to take it up there.

Back to the dillweed with the PF-9. I had originally hoped he was not a CHL holder and just a dork. I would hope a CHL holder would have the sense to not do something that dumb.

I know… I want a world where women are treated with respect and armed people treat their weapons with respect. It’s my fantasy. I’ll keep it, thank you very much.

I continue to consider myself quite lucky in that all of the gun shows I've ever been to in MI, VA, WA, and OR have been nothing like the kinds of shows I see people post about on here all the time. No skinheads, no nazis, no half-nekkid women, no tables of jerky, toys, beanie babies, etc. The most was the occasional table of airsoft stuff, which honestly I dont think is a stretch or out of line at all at a gun show (even bought myself a reall accurate neat Beratta 92 airsoft for mysela and the kid at one), mabe some ORIGINAL nazi memorabelia (which IMHO is a legit collectable/historic thing) displayed with other countries memorabelia, and never say any beanie babies or half nekkid chick (and believ me, I look real hard every time for the latter :D;)). I hope my good luck continues when I go to a show here the 12th/13th....

Honestly, I rarely buy anything, but for $12 for me and the wife, I think it a very enjoble couple hours of gun related entertainment.Way better than paying $20 for us to see some crappy movie......

The girl thing kind of fits right in with my signature on another forum:

The chauvinist, arrogant, jerk on the range or behind the gun counter does as much damage to the Second Amendment as Dianne Fienstien. They serve to alienate fully half of the voting base. I hold them in equal contempt.

For non Houston People,
In Houston you really only have two choices for purchasing firearms, either you have an FFL do you a transfer or you go to a Houston gun show. Say I want a Glock 19, I can go to Gander Mountain or Carters Country and pay almost $600 or I can go to a Houston show and buy it from Bachmans pawn for $440. You are basically buying handguns from the big four dealers in Texas at or even below whole sale cost. I have several dealer price lists from various gun makers and I have seen most NIB pistols at Houston shows for below my dealer list prices.

I went to Pasadena. I sold a two year old gun for what I paid for it ($400), and I picked up an XD from Bachmans for $411 otd. It was gun karma day for me. A new gun for essentially $11.00. Can't beat that with a stick. Gun shows in Houston are usually sucky, but my suggestion is to get there early on Saturday. More selection, and the dealers are friendlier.

I still enjoy attending shows - even if I'm just window shopping. Surfing the web and shopping online will never completely replace seeing and touching in person for me.

Also, the bargains are still there if you know what you're looking for and are patient. Took me two years and about six shows to find the M1917 Eddystone I needed to fill a hole in my WWII collection... at a price I was willing to pay. And all those shows were enjoyable - even the ones I left empty-handed.

BTW - I love it when people say there are no bargains any more so they no longer bother attending shows... but they're still kicking themselves for not buying 'X' for 'only Y dollars' way back when they used to go to shows.

I'll bet dollars to donuts that 'Y' wasn't so cheap back then, but only seems so given today's prices and 20-20 hindsight. I'll also bet that 20 years from now, assuming you can still buy a 'Z' it'll make today's prices look cheap by comparison.

Just talked to a guy at work today that paid $150 for a Winchester M14 (yes - the real deal) in the '86 time frame just before the registry closed. It was unregistered, but at the time an amnesty was offered - sort of a going... going... gone opportunity to pay your $200, get on the Class III registry and get legal. But $200 was a lot of money back then, so he traded the M14 for a .22 rifle.

Yup - $350 was a lot to pay for a legal, full auto M14 twenty years ago...
