I bought an RCBS 5-0-2 scale from a member here and I cannot get it to work properly. I've been advised on another forum that it's broken but I want a second opinion before I throw any more money at it. Take a look at the attached pics and tell me if you think the beam looks right. sorry for the poor quality but you can clearly see the beam is not straight and the hinge pin is not attached. Is that right?

Yep, sure is bent.
And it looks like right at the bearings, so they could easily be damaged too.
That's a shame.
Took a lot of force to bend that beam that way, even the base could be sprung.

I work on a lot of powder scales. If the beam is going to break, it will do so right where the pivot bar is pressed into the cast beam. Because the beam is cast, it will break right where the pivot is when/if it is straightened.... that is, if it's not already broken.

If you are being offered this scale for sale, then it is worth about $10 because you'll have to find a second scale to get a good beam and then meld the 2 sets of parts together. However, I note it does have the gold metal pan, which most are missing. When you put a another pan on a new beam you'll have to re-cal the whole scale. That's a lot of time, expense, and trouble for a low-end scale.

There is a second issue with this scale in that the minor adjustment only goes to 5. A good scale will go to 10 on the minor adjustment. IMHO there are simply too many nice 505's , 510's and Dillon Eliminators out there to mess with repairing this low end scale.

Thanks RF, so you work on these huh?

Is it normal for the hinge pin to float free and come out like that or is it supposed to be fixed?

Thanks,

CHH

It's got to be fixed into the beam hard, otherwise the beam teeters on the loose pin and not the knife edge. They do come loose when they are mistreated. You might try letting some LocTite thread locking compound wick in there to lock it up.

These are amazingly delicate instruments. It's a wonder they can make them at all in an affordable price range.
