Dog afraid of guns

I have a Doberman who is scared of guns .If he even sees one he is gone he wouldn't even go into the man cave where they are kept.If he hears a shot from far away when he is outside he wants in and hides next to the bed.I also had a Black lab when didn't like shooting .When i was in the back yard sitting at the shooting bench and shooting he would come over and start pawing at me until i stopped .I guess it hurts their ears.I have a horse that i shoot off of and he lets me put earplugs in his ears and don't mind shooting at all .

BTW,

I once had a cat that love to hunt with me when I was 16 or so. She would follow me and when I stopped and pointed my gun at a bird she would freeze and stare in that direction and run toward where the bird fell.

She was no dry food cat!

When the dog saw what that was all about, it hid under the couch when any gun came out of the safe.

I've seen that happen before. Dogs aren't stupid critters. I think that may be why my dog is scared of them so much. But I have no idea what he went through before I got him.

Got a rescue german shepherd about 2 years old that absolutely freaked when she saw my 1911 after I was done changing my extractor. Just carrying it back to the safe. Made me wonder about her former owners and what they tried with her training. Still, she's the best dog I've ever had.

My dad's Springer is fine with shotguns until the action closes. Then he bolts for the bedroom and won't be seen for a few hours.

I had a lab pup that I thought might be a hunter. I trained her by banging blocks of wood together while she ate and later with a .22. She was definitely not gunshy and went hunting with me several times. A 12 gauge report wouldn't phase her in the least. Unfortunately she had no nose to speak of, and wasn't much use as a hunter or a retriever. But I still liked her tagging along.

Until one day I took my boys into the woods behind the house for some informal plinking. The dog kept running out into the line of fire every time we got ready to shoot. I finally lost my temper and scolded her and gave her a whack with my hat and chased her back to the house. From that day on she hated guns and would hide anytime one was brought out. I still feel bad about that, even though she is gone now for quite a few years. Dogs are sensitive to many things and it doesn't take much from someone they love to leave a permanent imprint.

I currently have an SPCA adoptee who is afraid of rifles but she is fine with handguns. Go figure, makes me wonder about her previous owner.
