Apparently, the Federal Government will arrest US citizens and send to stand trial in Mexico for going down there and arresting other US citizens who are hiding from charges in the US.

HONOLULU - TV reality star Duane "Dog" Chapman was arrested early this morning in Hawaii, his publicist, Mona Wood, confirmed. Wood said she could provide no details.

MSNBC reports said U.S. Marshals arrested Chapman and two family members — Leland and Tim Chapman — on kidnapping charges.

The news channel said Mexico issued a warrant for Chapman's arrest for his alleged kidnapping of Max Factor heir Andrew Luster three years ago.

Chapman's capture of Luster — a serial rapist — in Mexico catapulted the bounty hunter to fame and led to the reality series on the A&E channel.

Wood says this is obviously a very upsetting time for the Chapman family. She says Chapman is a true modern-day hero.

"He arrests the bad guys — and he is definitely not one of them," she said, adding he would be vindicated.

If he actually committed a crime in Mexico, he should be handed over.

Follow proper extradition procedures and you won't have a problem. What did Dog think was going to happen? His prior criminal history should provide him some insight on how these things work.

(sigh) I'm a fan of Duane Chapman.

As one who has witnessed such up close (employment), Chapman had EVERY OPPORTUNITY to live a horrific life dealing with drugs, alcohol and violence: winding up in prison. You know what? "He didn't." That's damned impressive, considering. This man turned his life around.

That being said, the issue here is has to do with hypocrisy and politics.

Isn't there some film director loose in Europe -- we must know EXACTLY where he is -- living with child porn indictments?

"You don't go into other sovereign nations and snatch folks."

SIMPLE. :fire:

(Well, unless you're the CIA. Then we just cause them to "disappear...")

I am increasingly struck by the impression that only criminals enjoy protection under the law.

I know this comment is slightly off topic, and doesn't contribute to the thread, I just wanted to get it off my chest.

I hope he's cleared, NAFTA has to be good for something, he WAS engaged in legitimate buisness.

Ezekiel,
Duane Chapman is a convicted felon.
He did go to prison on a murder-related charge. He served a year and a half of a five year sentence before being paroled.

I know.

I'm just saying that could have been the end of the story, not the beginning.

In general, he deserves to be applauded.

Going to MX and snatching someone was a risk, however.

Isn't the extradition process fairly extensive before they can actually turn him over? And, given that he's got the bucks, aren't there some pretty good lawyers that can tie this up for a lifetime before anything happens?

The guy's a nimrod...

...And one of these days he and his idiot bunch are going to try to take down the wrong guy (like he's already being sued for doing) and that guy is gonna start shooting these crazy mall-ninja looking dummies assaulting him. I just hope the poor schmuck doesn't go to jail for it...

As for the charges in Mexico, Condie Rice should tell 'em to pound sand.

Yup! Mexican sensibilities prohibit handing over to the US those charge with capital crimes.

Yet

Illegal immigrants can commit murder in the US and scoot across the border where govt and family and friends will protect them. The inability to extradite from Mexico for capital crimes is a major problem.

New twist for the o7 season.

Week one: Dog gets sent to Mexico.

Week two: Mrs. Dog breaks into Mexican jail and escapes the Dog and Co.

Week three: Dog calls for an air drop of fresh mace canisters.

Week four Dog builds a raft to get back to Hi.

*******

Considering the confusion over who's President in Mexico, the Dog might be setting up shop in Acapulco before long.

las manos arriba hombre

Hold that bus!

I have another 11 to 12 million passengers to send back with him.

Luster was the scum of the earth that used his inherited money to buy his way out of every kind of legal jam.

The last straw was jumping bail between conviction and sentencing and fleeing to Mexico, where he paid of the local constabulary to look the other way.

I'm a little surprised that the Fed's bothered to follow up on this.

My bet is that he'll be back making new "Dog" episodes soon and the publicity will boost the ratings.

What did Dog think was going to happen?

He knew exactly what would happen. That by capturing this Luster guy he would become the "most famous" bounty hunter and be able to use that to launch some kind of celebrity, which he very successfully did.

All he missed was that the Mexican government would use him as a scapegoat.

The Mexican government knew Luster was in Mexico, that's been documented in a few places.

So, by this Dog doing what a country full of Federales could not, he's embarassed and shown the light of truth on the corrupt Mexican LE system.

Of course, something like that can't go unpunished, especially when our President-in-law Vincente calls his brother Jorge in D.C. and asks for a favor.

Besides that, I thought kidnapping was the national sport of Mexico.

He broke the law, time to face the consequences. I'm glad the US meets her extradition treaty obligations.

Anyway I'm pretty sure he will just get a slap on the wrist. He may not even step foot into Mexico. His lawyers will make sure of that.

Don't do the crime...

If you can't do the time.

Convicted felons like Duane "Dog" Chapman should know that already. He skipped bail on his July 15, 2003 court date. Nice going for a bounty hunter. :scrutiny:
