Domestic 7.62x39 .308 bullets rifles and ammo fact or myth?

I have also been told that domestic x39 is slugged .308. A friend of mine said that for this reason it is not as accurate in CZ carbines and found thins to be true in his experience.

I shoot as-cast wheelweight bullets from the same mold- the Lee 155-2R.

They shoot beautifully.

My pet load is 14.2 grains of 2400 with that bullet. Cheap, very light recoil, cheap, and accurate. Also, inexpensive!

I use the Lapua brass. Much higher quality, and only a tiny bit more expensive than the Winchester.

I haven't miked commercial 7.62 x 39 but I cast my own to .311. for Norinco SKS

I KNOW a lotta european caliber ammo in W/W white boxes is made by
Privi Partisan and Sellier & Bellot and might be large (ie. .311-.312)

Your statement might be the reason why the Ruger camp carbine is in that caliber which is indeed .308. Ed Harris says it has a large throat to swage imported ammo down to .308

NOPE! Bullet diameter isn't among the reasons that domestic 7.62x39 sucks. My guess is the Remington cases varying in weight by almost 10grs from low to high probably has more to do with it.

these groups were fired from a cz carbine with both diameters of 150grn Sierra bullets

Update: My new 20" 7.62x39 AR15 barrel from ER-Shaw also has a .310 bore. So we can hammer one more nail in this myths coffin.

Ruger now offers a limited edition NoI in 7.62x39mm, I would dearly love to know the bbl specs on it.

Ruger's 7.62 x 39 Bbl.

Responding to list question. C.E. Harris, one of the Ruger engineers connected to that project some time ago, is on a cast bullet list that serves me. Ed's writings os shooting cast bullet loads in hunting with SKS and other military rifles is seminal work. His NEI-designed molds have been adopted by Lee as well for the 7.62 x 39 (Lee 155-2R mould)

iirc his comment was their bbl has a generous leade that swaged bigger than .308 bullets down and permitted effective use of domestic .308 ammo as well.

This appears penny wise and pound foolish and I think (I hope) they have seen the light and went with a strait leade and a .310 bbl.

If they didnt, they are in for more bad times

Sorry to ressurect theis old topic

but I took some pics for another thread elsewhere that adds to this discussion.

Yearly bump in the hopes of dredging up more usefull info on this subject.

here's another confirmation via slugging from over on accurate reloading that the ruger 77 has a .310 bore

Dear Mr. Phelps,

Thank you for your inquiry at www.GalleryofGuns.com!

Ruger's groove diameter for the 7.62X39 caliber cartridge for either the Mini-30 or model 77's is .3100 - .3115 according to their engineering dedpartment. This is a compromise diameter designed to shoot either the .308 or .313 diameter ammo
that is available.

A .311 diameter bullet would be my choice for handloading applications if available.

I hope this helps!

Sincerely,

in summary so far we've determined

1.that only pre 93 ruger mini's had .308" bores

2.that winchester, remington and federal ammo for this caliber is loaded with "proper" diameter bullets for this cartridge. I will say that my only confirmation so far on the federal is my ballistic reference.

response from the folks at federal ATK re: 7.62x39 bullet diameters

thanks to the uber fast CS at federal I have a resonse to the following question I just sent out half an hr ago. These guys deserve a big thumbsup

Subject: Federal Premium - Ask the Expert Form

Hello I'm writing with regards to a technical question about your
7.62x39mm loadings.

PN# 76239B and A76239A

What diameter are the bullets you use in your loads?

Thanks for your response Ronnie

Subject: RE: Federal Premium - Ask the Expert Form

.310 is the diameter of our 7.62x39 bullets.

Thank you

FYI my Sako AII in 7.62x39 has a Hart 14-inch twist barrel and is chambered with the 7.62x39 LAPUA reamer as made by JGS. Good lots of East German and USSR Type PS Ball shoot about 1.5 m.o.a. over long series of groups, whereas handloads with Sierra 155-gr. Palma and 125-grain Game Kings with RL-7 powder are sub-half-m.o.a. when tested off a return to battery rest. Ordinary .308 hunting bullets from Sierra, Hornady and Speer are sub-m.o.a., as are properly prepared cast bullet loads.

You can build a rifle which will handle both foreign and US ammo. The .3114 major diameter forcing cone of 1 degree included angle does not impair accuracy with .308 match bullets when the machine work is properly executed.

R W Dale -

I guess it is my turn to bump this 4 year old thread in hopes of garnering new information.

I have a Century VZ2008 7.62x39 semi auto rifle, it is an American made replica of the CZ USA VZ58 or Czechpoint D-Technik VZ58.

The barrel slugs out at .308, see the following video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpuS02aJ2c4

So no longer is the Ruger (pre-93 mini 30) myth a myth it is now joined by the Century VZ2008.

So....

I need detailed load data and instructions from the community on .308 bullets in 7.62x39 brass/casings.

With russian factory ammo I am getting 4 - 5 MOA at a 100 yards, I am trying to cut this in half with handloading.

Thanks,

BB

Sorry bennybone. I don't see how I missed your posting.

To confirm you findings though I just slugged the bore on my century built GP1975 bullpup sporter and the slug measures at (drumroll please) .308" it would appear as though century uses widely avalible "American" 30 caliber barrels for their builds. Much like they used 5.56 barrels for 5.45 guns but not as extreme.

And that's a yearly bump for more info. Anyone with one of the new savages care to chime in?
