Domestic Enemies: Excerpts on the Web

Unfortunately the Domestic Enemies scenario as described in the original post is pure nonsense. I can imagine the possibility of a state's government being taken over as described (just barely) but the rest of what happens in the described story line would never be permitted. Forming a militia to attack land owners? I cannot imagine the Federal Government ever allowing that.

Remember this scenario?

[blockquote]
--SOVIET UNION SUFFERS WORST WHEAT HARVEST IN 55 YEARS.
--LABOR AND FOOD RIOTS IN POLAND. SOVIET TROOPS INVADE.
--CUBA AND NICARAGUA REACH TROOP STRENGTH GOALS OF 500,000. EL SALVADORE AND HONDURAS FALL.
--GREEN PARTY GAINS CONTROL OF WEST GERMAN PARLIAMENT. DEMANDS WITHDRAWAL OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS FROM EUROPEAN SOIL.
--MEXICO PLUNGED INTO REVOLUTION.
--NATO DISSOLVES. UNITED STATES STANDS ALONE.
[/blockquote]

Obviously, it didn't happen. But way back in 1984, was it inconceivable, no matter how unlikely?

Fortunately, John Milius and Kevin Reynolds didn't let the improbability of such events keep them from making a great movie that is still fun to watch today.

A few pointers:

Central does not have that sort of toy shop... ;)

While this state has a lot of Democrats, they are mostly old fashioned conservative Democrats, and have nothing to do with those radicals.

The tribes on the reservations have their differences, but would stick together in bad times, and would probably stay neutral.

The major gangs are all well represented here, and not just in Albuquerque. Small towns are a favorite hiding place for all sorts of folks. This state used to be a favorite place for the witness protection program.

While I don't see a big homegrown group taking over, it would be plausible for one or more factions to bring in outside help. Large numbers of mercenaries from Central and South America would certainly make things interesting.

I really do not know how many different factions would turn up, but there would be many, and the situation would be complicated.

With all the special stuff out at Kirtland AFB the Feds would have to keep some serious security out there, but a hostile foreign power could take advantage if they moved fast and had the people and transportation assets.

If you have any questions I am willing to help.

Okay, it's settled. She's working in a corn field in June, that's generic enough, and possible. And I'm just writing it as a novel, with plenty of gun details because they're integral to the plot, but I'm not writing a how-to book. There are plenty of them out there!

Matt

This is really funny. I just opened up EF&D a couple of days back for a second read after reading it last year...

And one of the atributes of a good book is it's ability to induce the reader to suspend his disbelief in the auther's premises.

NMShooter: I'd love to go through all of your points, but for some reason I can't get to the private mail buttons today.

I understand about the "Old New Mexicans" who consider themselves "Spanish" and not "Mexican" in any way. They are swept aside with the rest, as the demographic shift gains so much momentum, that the radicals, (bolstered by millions of illegals who are amnestied, given drivers' licenses, voter cards etc) are able to take power of the state govt.

At this point in history (2005) the NM Democrat party still feels it's advantageous to allow massive immigration, and go easy on voter registration requirements etc. They feel these new folks will vote Democrat. But it's sort of like busting open a pipe to get water. You will get water, but it's hard to control, or turn off! Like trying to start a "small" avalanche to get some snow. It's hard to regulate! Once you reach some hazy tipping point, the avalanche makes it's own path, and may not stop at the desired point!

I'm writing the tribes as having made an agreement with the state govt., sort of "neutrality plus."

The "Gobernador" Deleon is based on Reyes Tijerina (sp?) the "Tiger of the North." He's sort of a Mandela figure in Domestic Enemies. He is going to be assassinated, so that the really serious radical can take over. Of course, it will be blamed on an Anglo rancher, whose rifle will be found.

The gangs are coming to NM for sanctuary. They know they will be able to chill out in NM, join the Milicia "no questions asked," and be paid in land, property and loot. Like joining the French Foreign Legion, you can create a new name, with no past. Gang members who are not legal Americans will be promised "expedited" citizenship.

The state govt will be very careful to avoid treading on federal land. Especially Kirtland, Sandia, Los Alamos etc. That's all the feds care about at this stage. Of course, this is a form of appeasement by the feds. Sooner or later, if such an "Aztlan" vision came to pass and was consolidated, the feds would be booted out entirely.

Of course, this is all predicated on the federal govt being greatly weakened, broke, and having to deal with burning cities and critical national infrastructure issues elsewhere. NM would simply be a backwater, and would be ignored, as long as the bases and the labs were not threatened.

Oh Boy! I'm so looking forward to this! EFAD was a great read, in fact I have recently pulled it off the bookshelf and it's in the ReRead stack by my bed.

Any ETA on a release date yet? I trust you'll be selling direct with autographs? I ordered EFAD from Amazon in a fit of weakness on a large order...would prefer to order direct from you this time to more directly support it!

Kamicosmos: I'm really trying to write at a pace which will have the novel finished and in print by the end of 2005. I'm about 25% through, right now. I need to get my pages per day up though! I'll still do signed copies the same way as for EFAD.
Matt

Matt, Amazon UK doesn't have EFAD. Do you still sell them from your site?

How much is it to post one to the UK, just out of curiosity?

Read the excerpts

Travis,

I read the excerpts and now I'm hooked dammit! Just like when I read EFAD I was so mad my hair was standing up. I read EFAD twice and now I can't wait for the new one. Get to work dude!

Dan

Speaking of water, that will be a factor in the future in this state.

Would not be suprised to see water rationing, the state government has already had to release some water from the dam up north, and the aquifer keeps getting lower.

Water was the cause of more than a few shootouts in this state.

The new book continues in the spirit of the original, but with much better writing quality, faster-paced plot and more believable characters. Nice work, Matt!

Oleg: it has much better writing quality? I guess I'm happy about that! Oh well, onward and upward. Since I plan on writing about ten more novels, I guess it's a good thing to be improving my writing as I move forward.

Matt

NMShooter:
Water...hmmmm...might need to add a ticked off rancher, run off his land, who sabotages the Abiqui Dam, or something like that.

I heard the word corn in an earlier post by someone. Corn is what I've seen posted lately.

Matt's first book was one of the best that I have read with respect to grabbing my attention and then finishing too soon, even if the number of pages exceeded the norm, which gave me pause, and that pause was mitigated, unless you were an author that created a new religion, and then laughed yourself into your grave over the gullibility proscribed in his books. Breathe deeply.
Fiction, schmiction. Gimme fiction and details are irelevant to plot and sequence.
Keep at it Matt. 60 years of reading gives me seniority. The rest of 'em are pikers and you weave a terrific story. Fiction is more beautiful than fact.

grampster

PS: If I hadn't prodded him and that he went on a road trip to the high desert, he'd only be halfway where he is now. Hi Matt. :D

Thanks Gramps! I think you've really got where I'm coming from. The novel has to come first: plot and characters. The details like corn, or the required suspension of disbelief (Aztlanish "milicias" in Nuevo Mexico, at some time in the future) are secondary. If the novel isn't good, the rest can't make up for it.

Forgot to ask: How many people are you packing into New Mexico?

We have over 1.5 million right now, and most food comes from out of state, water reserves are being used.

Twice that and there would be rationing, assuming deliveries were being made.

I am not sure, since the local farming industry has shrunk, but I don't think there was ever enough food production to support more than a fourth of our current population, and that assumes there would be water for irrigation.

You might have UN relief flights providing food for folks in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, and food can be used as a weapon.

Of course that works both ways...

Hope that helps.

Matt,

I understand completely. I do wish you the best on your second novel, and though it's not a how-to book I hope you include lots of info/strategy on surviving police states (like the one rayna will be in while in New Mexico).

NMshooter: The notional time time period of DE is about 2012, give or take. I'm putting another couple 100K illegals into the state, enough to tilt the elections when they are amnestied and given their motor-voter rights! So in tough times nationally, it sounds like it might be hungry times in "Nuevo Mexico."

Now if disgruntled ranchers, pushed off of their land, really get angry, they could possible go after the water distribution. I guess the Abiqui dam up near Los Alamos is a big water source for Albuquerque and Santa Fe. It's just a massive earthen dam, very scenic area, I've visited the area.
