Don't buy K31's...

I bought one of the 5 gun "cracked stocks" packages that was offered several years ago. I believe I paid $60 per gun and ended up getting 3 complete guns out of that lot. Two of the barrels looked like they had been sitting in a barrel of water (there was still water pouring out when I opened the box). These 2 were so badly rusted that all I could do was use parts from them to restore the other 3. One had a cracked stock just in front of the band that hold the sling, so I cut the stock off and made one into a "sporter". I took this one over and had it Parkerized and cut the barrel back about 2 inches. It is now one of my favorite hunting rifles. The 4th one was missing a magazine so I used one from one of the 2 that had the barrels rusted beyond repair. The 5th one had a cracked stock, missing bolt and a cracked handguard. The barrel and magazine were in great shape so I took parts from the damaged ones to make a working gun. I just took this particular gun to the range last week and managed two 5" groups at 100yds without a scope (with my eyes I didn't think this would ever happen again). It's definitely not the prettiest of the bunch but it shoots as well as any of the modern rifles I own costing 10 times as much. What was really great about this old gun was it had one of the higher front sights on it that allowed it to be dead on at 100yds. Some day I'll thin out the herd but I know the Swiss will be the last to go.
