My mom has this RG-22 el cheapo .22 pistol she likes. She won't take my model 60 S+W .38 because its "too loud"(?!?!). Anyway, shes in a quiet neightborhood but I want to make sure she'll get as much bang as she can if she needs it. Tested using mini mags and they work fine. No issues as far as I can tell other then the cylinder is a little warm (as I expected). The weapon is clean, undamaged and ,other then stained from years of no use, is pretty much new. Wondering if I should chance 40 grain maxi-mags or is this pushing a crappy old timer too far? I'm planning on getting her a kel-tec .32 soon but til then this is my best shot.

Lemme get this straight: this is an RG revolver, right?

Sigh.

Run the checkout.

The good news is, there'll be enough beef around the cylinder to deal with any 22LRs, even CCI Stingers or Remington Yellowjackets. IF the gun is otherwise in good shape. At least a small diet of same.

At the checkout stage, you're looking for timing issues above all. You should then test-fire it with low-power 22LR fodder, see if it's grouping at least reasonably well, though it'll never be a target gun.

Assuming it's in working order, the lightweight hollowpoints are the best defensive loads for 22LRs.

"Maxi Mags" are .22 MAGNUM rounds loaded by CCI. They will not fit in a revolver chambered for .22 Long Rifle. If perchance they do fit in a gun marked as .22 LR, the gun is not safe to shoot.

A CCI Mini-Mag is just a high-velocity .22 Long Rifle cartridge.

There are plenty of high performance .22 LR rounds out there.

Juat a few,
Remington Viper
Remington Yellow Jackets
CCI Stingers
CCI Velocitors
CCI Quik Shok
Aquila Super Maximum
Federal Hyper Velocity

The CCI Maxi-Mag is a .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire cartridge which is a different round altogether. It won't even fit into a .22LR chamber.

The CCI Stingers and Remington Yellowjackets did the best in NAA's velocity testing of short-barrel 22LR revolver loads. They're just about the two best 22LR defense loads made.
