All of the Republicans seriously running for President with a real campaign will be in the Debate. That is paid the filing fees, and have polled more than 1% in the state and nationally. It will be on Fox News Channel @ 9PM EST.

Since it is FOX and Republicans it should be kid gloves. It will be interesting to see if certain candidates ever evolving view points continue to change with different demographics. I am willing to bet on certain morality issues they will. Also I am curious about gun control. There were zero questions on gun control in the last debate despite what are percieved to be broad differences among the candidates.

Fred Thompson is not running for President.

LAR-15:

You'll know Fred has announced his candidacy when you hear Titan6 crying his eyes out and demanding that Ron Paul (who?) run as a third party independent.

Fred Thompson. Pro-gun Republican who can actually win the election.

I have never voted third party before but with all the freedom stealers from both parties running like Thompson and Clinton it would be a good time to start.

You know thinking about it Clinton could win an election too. Sure dosen't make her a good choice though....

I do not know the debate format. Does anyone?

I believe the format is as follows:

- The debate will be delayed for approximately 10 minutes while the moderator waits for those audience members who expected to see Fred Thompson to shuffle out the exits, mumbling as they go.
- All candidates asked to speculate about when Fred Thompson will declare
- All candidates asked which is there favorite episode of Law & Order
- All candidates asked how they plan to cope with being schooled by Fred Thompson after he announces.

I think it's pretty much up in the air after that. Someone said something about snow cones being served in the lobby after the debate.

More like:

- Audience rolls in looking for American Idol singers, notices that Ryan Seacrest is not there and start to leave
- all candidates are asked if Melinda Doolittle will win it all
- Rudy G puts on dress and starts to sing My Way (again)
- Tommy Thompson's Veri Chip is activated and he starts to sing songs at random
- Romney declares that he has been a singer all of his life, just that he sang quiet songs
- Brownback states that the singing is satantic and will have none of it (at this point he would be right though)
- Tancredo sings, but only in English and demands that all of the other candidates do likewise
- McCain sings but demands that the singing be regulated and limited to 2 minutes or less per song, unless he is singing in which case it is okay...
- Huckabee sings Sweet Home Arkansas
- Hunter sings Green Berets but scowls the entire time
- Paul declares that he does not know how to sing and that we should return to limited government, rule of law and non-intervention.
- The host ignores Paul to focus on the other candidates as they are more electable...

Good post.

Look. If the primary comes down to Ron, Rudy, McCain and Romney, I'll give Ron Paul my vote.

If Fred's there, he'll get my vote. And not just because (in all honesty) he stands a better chance of getting elected, but because I share more views with him than I do with Ron Paul.

If Thompson taps Paul as a running mate over Steele or Hunter, I'll still vote for him. But I'd prefer either of the later.

Thompson and Paul are both great choices on 2A issues. But the remainder of their platform differences are rooted in moral beliefs which have a long history of oil-and-water type characteristics between social conservatives and libertarians.

The difficult thing for me with Paul is I actually disagree with many of his view points. That said, the things I consider most important issues I do agree with him on and he is unique in the race among the republicans in having a pro-freedom view point.

If Thompson enters the race and is healthy enough to go to the polls, he will most likely win the general election against the Democrats and any third party candidates from the left and right. This is not because he is opposed to the political machine but because he is a big part of it. Normally the most centrist candidate wins, normally the candiate with the biggest appeal to the elderly wins, normally the candidate with the most face time wins, the candidate with the backing of the most special interest groups.... wins. While he and McCain compete for the middle position he has the talk of a conservative and has only flipped on a couple of issues as opposed to McCain, whom people do not trust.

This is not to say that Paul has no chance (and his chances look better every day) but to fight the entrenched special interests in this country requires a level of commitment from the people of this country that they no longer have. People really like the drivel that Thompson is selling because it removes from them the responsibility of making a hard choice and dealing with independent thought and action. So long as they think someone is taking care of them they are happy. Paul wants to make people stand on their own two feet and not have the government take care of them anymore; this scares most people and they want no part of it.

Thompson winning is not a really a desirable outcome for freedom loving people that have been disappointed with the status quo. The disappointments will only get bigger. But he is a good choice for what passes for middle American today because he can make them feel safe and warm in their beds at night, regardless of if they are or not.

So in a field fraught with really bad choices he is certainly near the top of those bad choices. Despite being a centrist he is the most conservative candidate (Ron Paul not really being a conservative, more like a restorative at this point) in the field.

I suppose if I could take the whole repeal of the BORs thingee out of the equation than it would either be Thompson, Brownback, Hunter or McCain. They are all miles ahead of the RINOs in the race. With the nod to either McCain or Hunter due to their military service a quality I find appealing in leaders. They are all pretty close together on the issues. But since they all voted against freedom they are all off my list of acceptables.

This is too important an issue to let slide. The reason it is not a campaign issue is because both sides like having the power that they are not supposed to have. So if I have to vote third party I will. If my candidate loses, he loses. In the grand scheme of things another vote in Texas won't make much difference, but at least I will have the pride of having done the right thing and not the wrong thing.

Now thats funny.

I will be supporting Ron Paul. As for Thompson, well I just hope he does not enter the race. I disagree with his anti-freedom views on abortion and gay rights not to mention the support of the Iraq war.

I support Thompson for the same reasons you don't. I'm against the murder of the unborn, the further destruction of traditional families, and turning tail from the central front in the WOT.

Paul does not appeal to the social conservative. And before you issue a blanket demonization of the "religious right," keep in mind that we're the only folks standing between Rudy and the whitehouse. The abortion issue is what's going to prevent him from taking away your guns as POTUS.

Incidentally, it is the die-hard libertarians that are the biggest hurdle to overcome when getting fence-sitters to see the light on 2A issues. I never take "first timers" to the public range or a gun show. Too many "kooks" (as perceived by the fence-sitter) who can't wait to spout off about taking back the government or explain why C3 weapons should be completely unregulated.

It took the country a long time to get to where it is, and you aren't going to turn the clock back to 1776 by insisting on libertarian GOP candidates. Luckily, I'm confident it won't come to that.

Since I am no libertarian you will never succeed. Guns are not even my #1 issue *gasp*. Freedom, liberty and the constitution are my top issues. More laws, repeal of rights and handouts are no help.

Very few candidates take these seriously. They don't make good sound bytes. Therefore I have very few to choose among.

Debates can be painful to watch as they all try to stake out the least offensive position. They will tonight .

I said earlier in another post Ron Paul had NO chance of winning. I was impressed with his performance against the other candidates in the last debate but still have some misgivings about him. I haven't made a decision yet but Ron is growing on me. He appears to be the ONLY candidate that has actually read the constitution, understands it and is willing support it. He is also the least pandering to the audience. I wish Thompson would make a statement I'd be interisted in watching him along with the others.

Your assessment is absolutely correct. He will never poll higher than one or two percent. But I do like his pro Second Amendment position, unlike that of Giuliani or Romney. Fred Thompson is the only Second Amendment supporter who has any chance of winning.

Colt: "I support Thompson for the same reasons you don't. I'm against the murder of the unborn, the further destruction of traditional families, and turning tail from the central front in the WOT.

Paul does not appeal to the social conservative."

Some people just don't get what Paul is pushing. He wants the .Gov to have absolutely no affect/control on Marriage or give "rights" to Any one. Same on abortion. He would leave it to the states even though he is opposed personally and a pro-lifer.

The Federal gov has no responsibility or obligation to do 95% of what it does today and Paul just wants to scale it back to that.

Fred is on the same train as all the other big gov we hate. Using the Federal government to tell people what they can and cant do.

I'd like to watch this thing but I don't have cable or even a "dish." With all the stuff that can be done these days it seems like there must be some way to watch the debate on my computer. Unfortunately, I wasted 65 or 70 years not keeping up with technology and now I miss a lot of good stuff.
Can anyone suggest a way for me to watch these turkeys without calling Comcast or traveling to South Carolina?

>>Fred Thompson is the only Second Amendment supporter who has any chance of winning.<<

Not technically true. Oh, Fred's great on the 2A, no problem there, but so is one other with a prayer of going all the way: Bill Richardson.

A Democrat...

Thompson/Paul ticket?

Do you think that Paul would make an acceptable VP? By acceptable, mean both practically and politically. Would he settle for the second slot? And would his role as the potential VP help or hurt the ticket in general?

If not Paul, who else? What about Duncan Hunter?

Nick
