Double rifle

Pity the SxS doesn't come in 6.5 x 55 like the O/U does. No matter what pressures the thing will handle, it's likely the only SxS most of us can afford. I had a Russian shotgun long before any Russian guns were available Stateside. It's only draw back was a total lack of parts. Busted an extractor and couldn't get parts for it. Not a bad gun though.

Sunray: The O/U is a dang good rifle also. Get it in 6.5x55 if you want a double. I have it in .308 and it is jim dandy. :)

From the website

Baikal realized that you could not make a reasonably priced side by side rifle with the traditional methodology for barrel regulation (shims and solder). So, the engineers came up with a totally innovative idea. Fix one barrel and allow the customer to adjust the second barrel to the first. Therefore you sight in one barrel and adjust the second barrel point of impact to the first via a jackscrew between the barrels. You have to admit, the jackscrew is a simple answer to an age old problem of barrel regulation on a side by side rifle.

A simple answer, but I wonder how sturdy it would be. I'd guess this is why they only rate the rifle for low-pressure 45-70 loads. The jackscrew may not stand up to heavier recoil.

Did y'all scope out the single shot version??
W0W!! msrp of 199.00!!
I wonder if the single shot might be stouter and take whomper loads??
Sure, not as exotic as the doubel, but look how much supplies you could buy with the FIVE HUNDRED BUCKS ya save.
I don't need this rifle at all,but I sure could have fun with it.!!

************** BAD NEWS,FOLKS ****************

I emailed EAA and they aren't even bringing in the single shots for another six months at least.:(
I didn' ask bout the doubles but may be the same on that one.
I sure didn't see anything about not being avail. on their webpage.:(

No Ejectors?

As near as I can tell, the Baikal double has extractors, but not ejectors. Does this mean you have to dig the empties out one at a time with your fingers? How quick is that?

Cliff355: No ejectors?

According to John Taylor, one of the famed professional hunters of old, ejectors are not what you want in a double rifle. He would buy his without or disable the ejectors on any used model he bought with ejectors. Apparently picking out the empties was OK. He killed about 1,000 elephants and other assorted fauna like lions, rhinos, buffler, etc.

Big G:

Well, that is a very interesting point. It seems to me I have a book by Taylor somewhere in which he explains the pros and cons of various guns, and I'll have to review it to see what his rationale was on extractors. Maybe he figured they were too flimsy and would create more problems than they would solve.

IIRC, it was more that when you're up close and personal with something that can hit back the sound of the ejectors would allow them to get a fix on you for their charge. Most of the critters have poor sight but dang good hearing and smell, I guess.

Every .470 ect I've seen , including my old 30's Army and Navy , have super strong ejectors to throw the empties real hard in the event of a stuck shell! I think I will save the $ to buy one of the 45-70 Baikals this year. Whole lot of gun for the $. I guess this global economy has some advantages!;)

Cliff,

What BigG said is correct.

Taylor shuned the use of ejectors because when herd shooting elephants they will often just stand there after the first one is brain shot and falls with no fuss. Allowing the hunter to using an extractor gun to silently open the action remove the empty and replace it with a fresh cartridge. And score another hit before all hell breakes loose. The ping of the extractor would set the herd into instant panick and often allowing the elephant to locate the hunter from the sound and charge according to Taylor.

Since we don't herd shoot elephants for their ivory any longer this hardley a vaild point in todays double rifle. Ejectors are a good thing on a double and mine will fling empty .470 brass over my shoulder. They are quite stout.

Once I discovered that the EAA double was an extractor gun I lost all interest in it. I would want it for shooting drills and it's just to different from my .470 to make it usefull for me.
