I have a couple of beginners questions to ask.

I'm doing some customizing to my Marlin 336: Adding a William's peep sight with fire sight, replacing the ejector, adding a recoil pad, and removing the gold from the trigger.

Most of these are pretty idiot proof jobs. However, I've never done any gun improvement work before and wanted to see if I was going about things the right way.

The existing front sight drifted out pretty easy with a brass punch.

The dovetail on the new sight is larger than the existing dovetail groove, not by much, but by enough that I cannot get the new sight started down the channel.

My approach would be to bevel the sides of the sight enough to get the sight started and then use my makeshift press (miniature soft metal c clamp).

is this the correct way to go about the job?

Thanks for your help,

Dave

ps any other reliability improvements recommended? I found out when I disassembled it that it already had the stainless magazine follower upgrade.

This gun will be used as a camp and travel gun as well as a fun range toy. I have not decided if I will hunt with it yet although that possibility exists.

You are correct the sight should be modified, not the barrel. However, I would use a padded vise to hold the barrel and drive the sight in with a brass rod and small hammer.

Good Luck...

Joe
