dowel jammed in bore - what next?

I wonder how many times and ways it needs to be said.

How about:

DON'T USE A WOOD DOWEL TO DRIVE OUT AN OBSTRUCTION. IT WILL JUST SPLINTER AND BECOME PART OF THE OBSTRUCTION. PERIOD.:cuss:

Get the idea?

Good luck with that Jim.

But I still bet you the first five posts after someone asks about a stuck bullet next time includes using Dowel Rods and Phillips Screwdrivers to beat on it with!! :D

Took the B out after work today with 10+ tried and true for handloads.

Managed to put 9 of 10 into a 1-7/8" group @ 100 yrds. The stray, which was the first of the first group of 5, hit high and pushed all out to 2-3/4".

And that was done with the sun in the face and 100ish degrees F. I'm thinking the rifle may be OK, and I'm very lucky if it is. Time will tell.

Learned a no fun lesson either way.

Anyone still contemplating wood dowels please see angry Jim's post above. Might be time to switch to Sanka there buddy.

Now may be the time to get some JB Bore paste and do a little polishing on the scarred section of your bore. It will take those Q-Tip snags off and "may" help with the accuracy some, I did say may. I don't think it would hurt much unless you go wild or use a "wood" rod to do it with.

Not angry, just tired of seeing the same old thing again and again and again. It is almost like clockwork; every month, the same posting "I got a bullet/cleaning tip/patch stuck in the bore and tried to drive it out with a dowel rod and ......"

I thought if I at least made the print big enough, it might get through some thick skull and prevent at least one "I got..." posting.

I've had the exact same jam from misfires in the past. The bullet is typically just slightly into the rifling.

Best fix is to spray with some cleaner to let it wet down the bullet, then remove your otherwise useless steel cleaning rod and simply drop it down on top of the bullet over and over again, with no force beyond gravity. It will jar it loose without scratching the bore.

It's hard to get anyone to change those striker (firing pin) springs. No one thinks they ever wear out. Dowels, whittled tree limbs, live shells etc.... I always sent non-regulars
to Walmart.

The scratch in your bore likely won't have much affect with accuracy.

I am assuming you are shooting the Finnish M39?

If it doesn't come around you might jag up some scotch brite and clean your barrel where the burr is followed by some 800 grit lapping compound on a patch...and some bore shine.

It will likely resolve itself with repeated rounds down the pipe. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Cheers
Mac.
