Looking at building a Varmit Ar-15 and can not choose which one to go with. Hear some say Model1 and others say Dpms. Going with a 20" bull barrel but do not know which company to use. no real website found to compare them.
Any help would be great.

DPMS DPMS DPMS click off the "model1 sales" web page as fast as you can!
ummm if you're looking at building a rifle check out WHITE OAK ARMAMENT they got there act together! dpms makes a pretty good varmit upper.......model1 uppers ARE NOT KNOWN FOR ACURACY! "just say no to model1"

welcome to the forum

Model 1 Sales uses ER Shaw barrels in their stainless bull barrel uppers/kits. Shaw makes a good barrel but they are not entirely "match grade".

I've built a few rifles using Model 1 Sales kits. They are low priced for a reason. They are entry level stuff but none of them were complete junk. The one's I've built all shot acceptably IMO (typical AR service rifle accuracy with surplus ammo). Of course nothing will shoot that well with Wolf or the like which most of these "fun guns" got fed in their lives. I did have a 20" stainless varmit upper from them that would shoot sub MOA with good ammo but during the panic a good friend wanted it more than me and I sold it to him. The only Model 1 Sales kit rifle I have left is a LW 16" A2 CAR. It's a 1 MOA gun with Federal XM193 until the barrel gets hot (about 10rnds) and then it's a 2.5 MOA gun all day long. It is however the exception - not the rule and thats why I still have it.

If your looking for a cheap range gun/plinker - you could do alot worse than Model 1 Sales IMO (just check the rep Hesse/Vulcan/Blackthorne has).... Their Varmit kits have the potential to be good shooting guns for their intended purpose.... You never know until you shoot it if its going to be a spectacular one or not.... Just don't get your hopes up expecting a .2MOA gun for $425.

I don't know about DMPS.

White Oak makes a very good barrel. Know for it's accuracy. If your willing to spend the $$$ expect an exellant shooter.

In AR kits you definatly get what you pay for.

IIRC DPMS uses a wilson bbl where as Model 1 uses an ErShaw IMO these barrels are of equal quality with accuracy advantages splitting on individual units rather than manufacturer as a whole.

Between these two mfgr's I'd shop price and features as in my book the accuracy rep is the same in that NEITHER are a white oak by any stretch

White Oak uses wilson tubes unless you opt for the Kreiger blank $$$$$$$$$ My wilson bbl'd white oak upper shoots very very good

just my opinion, krochus, but i'd put wilson a bit higher than shaw

either way, my bet is that if model1 used krieger barrels, the whiteoak/wilson combo would still be more accurate, because the barrels may be splitting hairs, but the way they're chambered and crowned is likely not

maaaaaaaayyyyybe

But I've had the most astounding results from the midway A&B (er shaw) as have I with my wilson bbl's.....Either way both are a solid OE grade tube for sure.

I agree, but I also firmly believe the same would apply to the DPMS side of this debate

I've not heard anything really bad about the DPMS bull barrels... except weight.

I'd personaly go with White Oak to save a little $$ or just say F-it and buy a Noveske. With either I'd go with a heavy profile not a full on bull barrel, I think they run ~.9" under the handguards then step to .75" at the gas block (so you can use any standard block you want) and stays there till the muzzle.

I went Noveske on my AR-10 build (what's an extra $200 in the grand scheme of $3000+ build? ) and it really kicks ass. I'm seriously considering going with them again for this next 5.56 build...

I meant save money over the Noveske not the DPMS.

ETA: ADCO firearms has some good looking choices for the White Oak barrels, I wonder how that service rifle one stacks up?

Isn't just who made the barrel but how well the extension was installed and chambering was done.

Wow lot of info to process. But coming up with the white oak as the winner? Price was not bad compared to DPMS. Model 1 price worried me that much under DPMS. Thank you all for the help and i will keep reading you post.

problem with whiteoak is the lead time. if you want something, you need to think ahead. like, 3 months ahead usually

model 1 may make some questionable stuff but ive never hand problems with there barrels. Ive got a 1/7 twist hbar stainless barrel that will shoot 1/2 moa. But to be honest ive got a couple pretty accurate dpms guns too. If you get a dpms make sure your getting a chrome lined barrel as most of theres arent.

i'll bet money your avg delton gun with a wilson or shaw barrel won't hang with an average dpms gun with wilson or shaw barrel.

I am shooting 40g nosler ballistic tip w/ nosler brass, 25g hodgdon benchmark and rem 7-1/2 primers. is the 1/12 twist 24" bbl the better way to go from WOA. or 1/8 1/9 better. all the help is great.
shot Ruger M77 Before now going to AR-15.

I had 3 DPMS rifles and now down to 2 but whatever bbl they use it's a good one! Accuracy with all three was a given.

Just looked at White Oak's website and their uppers are pretty well priced, considering they are supposed to be some of the most accurate ones you can get.
