I want to buy a DPMS AR 15 rifle for plinking/varmints/target.

I'm looking at two separate models/barrel configurations. One has a parkerized bull barrel the guy says is good to 400 yards. The other has a stainless barrel he says is good to 600 yards.

Two questions:

1) Is DPMS a reliable brand?

2) Are the ranges he describes about right?

thanx.

As far as reliability, I've owned an entire DPMS AR-15 in the past, and presently have one of their 6.8mm uppers on an RRA lower. Never had any problems with the whole rifle or the upper, personally.

DPMS is considered one of the more accurate brands of Ar's. As far as what range it is good for is really dependent on barrel length more than anything. assuming you are putting a scope on it, a longer barrel will do better at the longer ranges than a short barrel (all else equal). If using open sights, a longer barrel will help here too as will the longer sight plane of the longer barrel (up to 20").

Reliability

My only problem I ever had with DPMS is with the chrome plated carrier. You either have to manualy scrape the chrome out of the key or "work through it" about 200 rds. Afterwards it works. plus added a lil "bling"

Quite happy with mine

an A-15 CMP model. 20" stainless match barrel, 1:8 twist. No failures of any kind unless I try to make it eat Olympic ammo, which it won't chamber, but then it's a match barrel and chamber and not a service-type. Shoots Fed XM193 and my handloads all day.

I like mine

Mine runns like a top. Its a 16" preban style, and have only shot it out to 200 yards, but with quality loads that it likes, it is sub moa. I also have a nother lower that I'm putting a 6.5 Grendel upper on. I think that DPMS is just as good as Bushmaster, and I have found, IMHO, their fit/ finnish is a little bit better.
